This is the history of the Young Marines:

  • The Young Marines were started by a small group of Marine Corps League members. They formed the Young Marines of Waterbury, Connecticut in the year of 1958.
  • About two years later in 1960 the unit had swelled to over 300 young males and over 20 adult instructors.
  • In 1962 more than 1500 males were involved with the Young Marines in about 10 cities, and towns. They were sponsored by the Marine Corps League throughout the state.
  • On October 17, 1965 an official charter was signed, and the Young Marines were adopted nationally. In 1975, females were finally allowed to join.
  • In 1995 the Young Marines went international with units in Okinawa, Japan.
  • Also in the year of 1995, the Kennebec Valley Young Marines were formed.
