Fender Shenandoah/Malibu and misc parts

SHENandoah + malIBU = SHENIBU

As I'm writing this, I'm trying to piece together exactly how this came to be....

If I remember correctly I bought a trashed 1968 Shenandoah body off ebay for $20 or $25. I think I bought it so I could have a period correct pickguard for my 1965 Palomino. The top on this Shenandoah had been stripped and sanded severely. It was about as unstable as it could be, so I peeled the top off it and I've been using it for spruce scraps ever since; grafts, repair cleats, etc. I tried to sell this body on ebay a couple times and couldn't get ten bucks out of it.

So it sat.

Somehow I managed to buy another guard, a NOS bridge complete with saddles, a neck plate, and a 1968 Malibu neck.

These pieces just sort of showed up.... I'd see a bargain on ebay and I'd buy it.

In May or June of 2007 I bought the spruce for the top, planed and unjoined. I didn't touch it until a few months later, when I braced the top with a single X brace and added it to the body.

In the process I also had to add wood the sides of the neck pocket, as the 12 string neck pocket was wider then the Malibu neck. This was the perfect time to do it, as I could then cut the top to fit the Malibu neck. I then routed the body for binding and added it. I also added binding around the neck pocket to hide the maple I added.

Here it is with a few coats of lacquer (it will need more)

And with the bridge in place:

It's been several months since I sprayed it and I am likely to wet sand it and add more coats. Nothing's on fire, it'll happen someday....
