The Garden

On this page we will talk about

First of all lets talk about all the good stuff iguana's can eat!! You may want to copy this down or print this page.

There are many many things your iguana can eat, and a few that it can't. The things it can eat are...

(from A to Z)Apples,Asparagus, Avacado,Apricots,Blackberries,Blueberries,beets,carrot tops,cactus pads,cilantro,collard greens,dandilions,escarole,figs,green beans,green bell peppers,green onions,grapes,kale,kiwi fruit,leeks,mustard greens,mushrooms,okra,parsly,pears,parsnip,pricklypear,radish,rasberries,snow peas,turnip greens,tomatoes,yellow squash,and zuccini.

The things it can't eat are...

dog food, cat food, any meats, pizza, cheese, lettuce, carrots, cabage, onions, and pretty much anything with animal protein in it. If it came from an animal don't give it to the iguana.

Iguana's are herbivores completly. That means they only eat plants.Period! I'm sure you've heard that if you feed your iguana dog food it will grow faster. This is true, it will grow faster, But it will also die faster. If you feed your iguana any kind of animal protien you will take about ten years off of it's life. So Please do not give it any animal protien at all!!!

Next we will discuss when to feed. You should feed your iguana first thing in the morning after it wakes up. If it doesn't come eat right away don't worry it will eventually. Both the food and the iguana need to warm up first to ensure proper digestion.

Now for when to feed the diferent foods. You should pick at least three greens and three vegies from the list to give your iguana. Fruits should be fed in very small amounts about once a month. As a treat.

You may also want to add a calcium supplement to the food. This can be found at your local pet store like Petco. When getting the calcium supplement You should always get the 2:0 ratio kind. this is calcium with no phosphorus. You need to have twice as much calcium than phosphorus.

The next thing you want to do, is cut up the food so that the iguana can eat it easily. Iguana's don't really chew their food, so it needs to be cut up small enough for them to swallow it without chewing.

The best greens to give are Collard greens, Mustard greens, and Parsley. These are all high in calcium.(parsley is the highest). It is a good idea to include at least one of these in the salad every time. You can make up to a weeks worth of salad at a time and keep it in the fridge.

Finally lets discuss water. You should have two sources of water for your Iguana, one for drinking and one for relieving itself in. Iguana's usually like to go potty in water, that is why you should get a shallow bucket that is easy to climb in and out of, and big enough to fit the iguana's body. Fill the bucket with about one to two inches of warm water. Also provide a seperate source for drinking. The drinking dish should also be shallow, but smaller than the potty bucket as I like to call it.

Well, I think that about covers the feeding! If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me with them! Thanks and happy feeding!
