Hilltop School's Curriculum
Outline
While we are very familiar with the California Department of Education's framework for various areas of curriculum, at Hilltop School we do not confine ourselves to those minmal standards. We offer more. Research suggests that learning a second language at an early age can enrich mental development. Studies have shown that achievement in the "basic core" subjects (math, reading, etc.) increases when Fine Arts are included in the program and declines when these subjects are left out. Computer technology has a tremendous positive impact on learning. A look at the daily schedule reveals that Spanish, computer skills, and experiences in the Fine Arts are included at all grade levels everyday. The curriculum is student driven with the theme for each session suggested by the students. Organizing curriculum thematically allows the teacher to personalize lessons and integrate skills and subject matter, thereby enhancing learning in all areas. Motivation is high when the subject matter is chosen based on the interest of the students. In addition, it is what is known as a three year spiraling curriculum. This enables the students to explore different subjects from year to year and revisit information at a more mature level after a three year cycle. |
