Counseling Corner

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to a new school year. I'm very excited because we have many things to look forward to this year. One very important tool I have been anxious to use is this school site web page. I will include current information on programs and committees, classroom topics, sign ups for groups, parent information on a variety of topics, and anything else that I find interesting. I will change the site information periodically so please check in often. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions, comments, or suggestions. Have a great year.

Sincerely,

Becky Pappas-Jones
DI- Stonington Elementary School Counselor

Sept 16, 2002 DAPA Team Meeting(initials stand for Drug Abuse Prevention Activities) 3:00 in Guidance room -#225. This meeting is open to all staff, parents, community members, and agency personel. We have lots of thoughts for a variety of presentations this year. We'd love to see you there.

A wonderful program we reinstated last year was Big Brothers/ Big Sisters School Based Program. Sue Merrill is coordinating the program from the Big Bothers/ Big Sisters of Hancock County with offices based in Ellsworth. Working with her is Martha Jordan at the High School and Becky Pappas-Jones at elementary level.

Last year we had five mentors from DI-Stonington High School working with five elementary students. One community "Big", Rene Sewall is continuing her work with a "little" 4th grader also.

This year we hope to gain new mentors from the sophmore, junior and senior classes. Perspective mentors need to have schedule openings available to coordinate with elementary students. "Bigs" will receive community service credits for their work at the elementary school.

"Big Brothers and Sisters" from last year will be helping train and organize the program this year. Robert Carter is the high school program chairman, Jenna Eaton, Tereena Robinson, and Shauna Schmidt will help organize this years mentors. We said good-bye in June to Jennifer Hagerthy another 2001-02 "Big" who graduated last year. We miss her enthusiam already and hope she enjoys her college career.

Meeting time and place for these "Bigs", Sept. 24, 2002, 3:00 in the Guidance Office at DISES

.The high school program will begin after potential mentors have contacted Robert and several introductory and training meetings have been held.

At the elementary level teachers, parents, and students may sign up students for a "Big". I can be reached at 348-6301 ext. 226 for any questions.
