Notice to Students and Parents

WORK PERMITS

The State of Maine requires Work Permits for all minors less than 16 years of age.  The minimum age for employment is 14 in specified occupations outside of school hours for limited periods of time.  (There are limited opportunities for students under the age of 14.)

Permits are available through the Office of the Superintendent located above the Sunset Post Office, 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.

To obtain a Work Permit:

·        Both the minor and one parent/legal guardian must be present at the Superintendent’s Office to sign the application form.

·        You must present the minor’s birth certificate and have his/her Social Security number available.

·        The minor must have a job offer and know what the duties of the job will be prior to applying for a Work Permit.

·        The name, address and telephone of the Employer must be provided.

Once the application is complete, it usually takes 10-14 days for the State to process the permit.  The authorized permit will be mailed to the minor’s home address.  It is his/her responsibility to deliver the permit to the employer.  The employer must have a valid work permit on file before allowing any minor under age 16 to perform work.

Please contact the Superintendent’s Office at 348-7777 if you have any questions.
