About Concrete

Concrete will last for decades.

Concete is a durable material that has been used for centuries. Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand and aggragate.

Control joints are planned for cracks which allow for movements caused by temperature changes and drying shrinkage. In other words, if the concrete does crack the workman placing the concrete will want to have an active role in deciding where it will crack and that it will crack in a straight line instead of randomly.

Space joints properly. Space joints (in feet) no more than 2-3 times the slab thickness (in inches). A 4" slab should have joints 8-12 feet apart.

Cut joints deep enough. Cut joints 20% of the depth of the slab. A 4" thick slab should have joints about 3/4 " deep.

How to cut joints. Grooving tools cut joints in fresh concrete. Saw cutting cuts joints as soon as the concrete is hard enough that the edges abutting the cut don’t chip from the saw blade.

About Concrete textures

Concrete textures

Patterns can be made on the concrete, such as swirls, or different size arcs. The texture created can be Coarse, medium, or smooth depending on the tool used to impart the pattern. Wood floats create coarser textures. Aluminum floats or steel trowels create medium or smooth finishes. You can also use a broom to create your typical sidewalk finish.

Concrete can be stamped to look like brick, cobblestone, slate, granite, stucco and a wide variety of other patterns.Using different colors, stain, borders, raised leaf and scroll and other unique designs including inlays and the use of special aggragates concrete can be an enduring work of art.

When different combinations are used the results can be stunning.
