One Thing

Have you ever had a conversation maybe when you were young and asked,
"Hey, ya remember that one thing?"
It seems like a great many Christians have forgotten that one thing....our romance with Jesus.
King David said in Psalm 27 that even if an army rises against him, he only wants one thing- to dwell in God's Presence all his days & to gaze on the attractiveness of the Lord. Here is a king who is able to command anything to happen at a word and the one thing he wants is to be consumed with God on a daily basis! "You have said, Seek My face [inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You, Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity and on the authority of Your Word]."-Psalm 27:8
How much we know really isn't the issue. Whatever we are giving our heart to is what we are worshipping. Even though the rich young ruler (in Mark 10) carefully observed all the commandments from boyhood, Jesus told him he lacked ONE THING- an abandonment of all he had so that he could pursue Jesus.
In Luke 10 we find Mary seated at the feet of Jesus. That's all we need to be occupied with. We're not doing it to get anything from God, not even stuff we think will make us better Christians. We are there to honor him. And if nothing seems to happen, at least He can say we were there with Him. Martha was distracted from the ONE THING Jesus said was needful. Ironically, the thing that distracted her was much serving. We can be so preoccupied with doing God's work that we miss His will. Forget about all the responsibilities you think you ought to be doing for God. The problem with trying to manage our spirituality is just that- we're the manager! He doesn't call us to things to do. He calls us to Himself. Only an overflow from that produces effective service. God is jealous for us/our time/our affection. He will not share His glory with another. And we have been involved in other loves. In 2Corinthians 11:2-3 Paul said we are betrothed to one Husband, to present us as a pure virgin to Christ. But he was fearful that just as the serpent deceived Eve, so to we might be seduced and deceived from wholehearted simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. May we fall on our faces, surrender all, like we said we did at first, and re-embrace our First Love. From this point on, pray that no situation or even a thought will be allowed to compete with the Glory of God.
Yes, furthermore, I count everything as loss compared to the possession of the priceless privilege (the overwhelming preciousness, the surpassing worth, and supreme advantage) of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord and of progressively becoming more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him For His sake I have lost everything and consider it all trash in order that I may gain Christ- the Anointed One. -Phillipians 3:8
