There is a God we want and there is a God who is- and they are not the same. Because I think of you or any individual in a certain way, does not make it so. In the same way, my perception of God does not change who He really is. To base God on our own understanding is to make the mistake of molding Him into our image. The commandment says not to make any graven images. We do that in a spiritual sense when we define God on our terms. If our working knowledge of God is tied to our theories of Him, we redefine His character based on our wishes. By these standards, is He truly God? Not really. But it is the easiest way to deceive ourselves and still feel good about it.
