Introduction
Violent crime has always been a continuing issue in today's society and the way in which the perpetrators of these violent crimes are dealt with has also sparked heated debates. The death penalty was instigated as a means of punishment for those crimes so severe and brutal that death seemed the only fitting punishment. The death penalty, however, is not always the most appropriate form of punishment for basic monetary reasons and due to the situations surrounding the crime, such as the defendants race or possible mental retardation.
