Aimi Komori is our heroine. She is not quite 17 years old (unless you read the English manga, where she is 18), an orphan, and terribly shy. As a result of this she seems very lonely. Katsura tells us that she has lived alone since she was 13, and only now does she have a friend - Demota, the demon.
Aimi is a tiny, slender girl, without much figure. I mention this because her transformation into Shadow Lady gives her a VERY full figure. So not only does she lose her shyness, she gains a shape. Whether or not this is part of Shadow Lady's attraction for her we do not know. We do know that Aimi at first hates her shy personality. Shadow Lady makes her feel so free, like she can do anything. But then Aimi comes to a realization: Shadow Lady is a part of her. Somewhere inside her she is just as strong and outgoing. This thought gives Aimi hope, especially when she meets Bright. She falls instantly in love with him, but then finds out that he loves Shadow Lady. At first she is exstatic, then heartbroken. But eventually she realizes that she is both Shy Aimi and Shadow Lady - and those two together make up Aimi Komori.
Katsura does a wonderful job of developing Aimi's character. Her entire transformation from unhappy to happy with herself is very clear, as is her loving nature. One other thing that I was toying with is her first name. Now "ai" means "love". I don't know what "mi" means, but given the other English plays on words in this series, I think it is entirely probable that "Aimi" is supposed to at least connote "love me". It would certainly work for the character.
Mene's Opinion Aimi is a very realistic character. I've met many people who hate themselves, but love an image that they create. Katsura does a fantastic job of showing this. Also it is so nice to read a romance where both people are likeable characters who don't spend have their time finding reasons to be mad at the other, or senselessly hurting them. Also it interesting to note that not only does Aimi's figure change, but so does her coloring. As Aimi she has pink hair and blue eyes, Shadow lady has silver hair and brown eyes. This way it is even believable that someone would never suspect that Shadow Lady is her.
