Now Church performs Williams' music in his live shows, including his Baltimore Festival performance at 9 p.m. Saturday. Church is joined onstage by his wife of four years, Terri Lisa Church, and their four-member band, Side Trak. The Churches have traveled across the United States and Europe, performing country cover songs and original tunes from their two CDs, "Custom Made" and "A Legend Froze in Time: A Tribute to Hank." Both David and Terri Lisa Church count country music icons among their influences: David Church's tastes lean more towards Merle Haggard, George Jones and Marty Robbins, while Terri Lisa Church prefers Anne Murray, B.J. Thomas and Karen Carpenter. Both traditional and contemporary country songs are in their repertoire, which can be found on www.davidchurch.net. The highlight of David Church's career came in 2003, when he was asked to perform at graveside services commemorating the 50th anniversary of Williams' death. Backed by members of the original Drifting Cowboys, he sang, "I Saw the Light." A friendship with Don Helms, who played steel guitar for the Drifting Cowboys, was born of that service, and the two men collaborated on "A Legend Froze in Time." "The older I get, the more the influence of (Williams) comes out in my music," David Church said. He also performs a Hank Williams tribute show, complete with narration and songs, that chronicles Williams' brief life and career. The Baltimore Festival performance likely will include a few classic Williams songs, David Church said, but will mostly be a mix of original and cover songs. Side Trak features guitarist Dennis Williams, whose uncle is Chet Atkins; fiddler Thomas Jenkins; steel player Richard Tipple, a Lancaster native; drummer Bob Kozek of Grove City; and bassist Steve Yancer, also of Lancaster. "We have a pretty good blend right now," David Church said of Side Trak. "(They're) some of the best musicians from around here, I believe." In his spare time, David Church runs a construction company and looks around the nation for events to play. He and Terri Lisa Church often perform in casinos and fairs, his favorite venue because the concert-style setting allows people to focus on the music rather than being distracted. "That's the best part of the business -- being able to get out and meet folks," he said. Even with country tunes recently becoming influenced by pop music, David Church remains steadfastly traditional and true to his idol. "I'm just plain old country," he said. It was an incredible honor and I consider it to be one of my lifetime achievements. And even more special was meeting so many of “Hank’s” family, friends, and fans. I also met the drifting cowboy responsible for “sound” that made Hank, Mr. Don Helms. We sat and talked for hours the day before the event about his years with Hank. Don had a very special way of making you feel like you were watching it all happen. He was an extraordinary man that I became fast friends with. I had the pleasure of working with him several times, and recording 2 albums, “A Legend Frozen In Time”, and “Softer Side o f Blue”. I was drawn to Cecil Jackson, the founder of the museum. Cecil’s knowledge and stories of Hank were boundless. He was humble, always crediting others for their contributions. His enthusiasm to preserve the image of our first superstar of country music and traditional country, gave us a common bond and immediate friendship.” David Church is making a huge connection to fans who are starving for the traditional sound of “Retro Country” music. From college students to great grandparents the impact of his “roots/retro” music brings a connection that crosses generations. He has gained major attention by the mega music website, “Reverbnation”. Reverbnation features over 2.9 Million artists all over the world. His original song, “I Don’t Live In Lonely Anymore” rose to #20 on the national charts. This week he was featured on the “home” page of Reverbnation. The site gets over 250 Million visits a month from unique visitors. David is recognized all over the world for his tribute to Hank Williams Sr; “Church sounds so much like Hank it is amazing”, stated Joe Jenson, producer of Midwest Country TV show. David’s background is firmly rooted in traditional music, with a strong influence by the early sounds from Jimmy Martin, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins and Merle Haggard. He stated, “I really don’t try to sound like Hank, but just love the music and want to preserve and bring it to the fans.” He is also recognized for standing on his own, with his own music. Church has been featured as a regular on the RFD-TV’s popular show “Midwest Country” for the past 9 years, along with his wife, Terri Lisa Church. Marty Martel, president of ROPE and the officers named Church as a “celebrity” in 2010, when he performed in Nashville at their annual benefit, beside of major artists, Lorrie Morgan, Crystal Gail, John Conley, and more. He has also toured with Gene Watson. In recent month’s Church was recognized and honored by Martin guitars as the “#1 Hank Williams Tribute act in the world”. He was asked to attend and perform at the NAMM conference in Nashville TN, where Martin guitars where introducing a new “retro” series guitar. Thanks so much for all of the cards and letters! You have all made us feel very special and loved. And we truly appreciate it. Sorry our cards are so late, but the past Month and half have been so busy it has made my head spin! I'll start out in October. We went to Minnesota to film the "Midwest Country" show. It is always wonderful to see Joe and Kathy and the gang there. They make us feel very welcome and it is a true treasure to perform and be a part of their show. Then it was off to Iowa. Arlan and LaVonne Herzog, (hope its spelled right) hosted a show for us at the newly remodeled Lakeside Ballroom in the beautiful little town by the Mississippi River, Guttenberg. Also helping to promote the show John and Erma Decker and Clarence & Bertha Pfab. Thanks to all of you for your help! The show was a huge success. I have to tell you some of the details. We did the show in Min-nesota the night before and traveled all night on the bus. We arrived, ate breakfast and set up our equip-ment. It is quite a job, and for anyone that has ever helped they understand why it can take 4 hours to set up. Anyway, we set up and thought we would go take showers and do the sound check when we got back from them. So half of us went to take showers. The hotel had been completely restored, called "The Land-ing". To our delight, the father of the owner gave us a special tour of the hotel. If you ever want a place to get away, this is it!! It is just beautiful and not expensive. Right on the river makes it a very scenic place, and romantic. Check out the website. http://www.thelanding615.com/ So we took our shower and headed back for our sound check. When we arrived at the ballroom, there were people EVERYWHERE! We could hardly believe we had only been gone an hour. We still had 4 guys to shower, so there was to be no time for a sound check. But our road manager/sound tech, aka Dadio tuned us in as we opened the show. And it wasn't long before he had it sounding just like he had worked hours. It was a HUGE suc-cess and we certainly hope to do another show back at the ballroom next year. Thanks so much to every-one that helped and to all the staff at Lakeside Ballroom. The food was also incredible!!! Our next show was Le Mans France. It was an incredible, wonderful experience! The show was sold completely out, and we were quite surprised that so many of the people, even though they could not speak any English, where singing along with David on all the "Hank" songs and even some of his originals! It was so great to find out that Hank was still so well remembered in France. We found the French to be very warm, welcoming, helpful everywhere we went. We had the opportunity to stay in Paris for several days and see many of the beautiful buildings and art. The light show on the Eiffel Tower was so incredibly breathtaking. Everyone should have the opportunity to see it in their life! We went to see the "Mona Lisa." David snapped a picture of me next to her and told me he didn't need Mona, as he had "Terri Lisa." (He can be romantically funny sometimes) We had our band leader, producer, Dick McVey and wife, Char-maine with us. Also along where my best friend, Janella and Irvine Suda. Janella wrote one of the songs that I recorded on my upcoming cd. She is an awesome beautiful person inside and out. We went to the "Latin Quarter", a section in Paris, and ate at a restaurant with "French Cuisine". Char-maine decided to try the "Escargot". (in plain terms snails) As we had requests from our grandkids specifi-cally asking for a picture of us eating this French dish, we decided to have a taste. I got a great picture of David, and the look on his face says it all! Check the second page! Needless to say, we will not be tempted by this dish again in the near future! We had a great time. We also had the opportunity to meet the owners of "Dreamwest" magazine that I sometimes freelance as a journalist for. They were very much responsible for getting us to France. Thanks "DREAMWEST"! And as soon as we returned from France, with some much needed family time with both of our families, and a few days home, we headed to Texas with the bus packed. We performed in Edna, TX as the Flag City Opry with Liz Talley. If you have never heard Liz, she is a fantastic very "country" lady and great songwriter. She is getting a lot of attention on XM radio. The next day we flew out of Houston to Calgary Canada to perform at a "Blue Christmas" with Gene Watson. This was our first trip to Calgary, and we were amazed at the beautiful mountains as we flew into the airport. We really lucked out as we had been told that it would be extremely cold. I don't have to tell you the fear David had, as he HATES cold. But the weather was beautiful, sunny and about 35 degrees. I guess Calgary can have temperatures of -20 this time of year. The production of the "Blue Christmas" was quite something. The Rev. Bruce Sheasby puts on this benefit every year. It is a variety show they film it and all the proceeds are donated He loves "Elvis" and does a incredible job performing his songs. He included many children dancers and several other art-ists. And Gene Watson is always phenominal. Www.therevsings.com/bluechristmas We have had the pleasure of performing with Gene several times over the past few years and he and David have become good friends. His new cd just received the "Album of the Decade award". It is really awesome and we encourage you to pick up a copy. It is an incredible honor for us to be friend with such a wonderful legend in country music. We were so happy for Gene and can't think of anyone more deserving! We flew back to Houston the next day headed to the Rio Grande Valley here in Texas. We'll be here for the next 2 1/2 months for shows. It will be nice to be in the sunshine for a while, and maybe David will be motivated to write his next great song! He loves taking walks with our boxer dog, and sitting in the hot tub up by the pool at night. And if you are bored and cold up north, come on down and join us here in Har-lingen, TX. My big news is that I am getting ready to release my first solo cd. It has been in the making for a long time. I have included several songs that I wrote, one that David co-wrote with me called "Somewhere Down the Road", a duet with David, "Apartment #9/Together Again" medley, and of course some of my favorite "Patsy Cline" songs. It's called "I Find Myself In You", dedicated to my children and grandchildren. I know some of you have been waiting for a long time, and I really appreciate your support prior to the re-lease of the cd and the patience! While in Nashville recording, we had some problems and I had to leave the studio before finishing the cd. We were not able to schedule time back in the studio until just prior to leaving for France. I would like to thank Dick McVey, our producer for his very hard work in completing the album. Dick has produced all of our cd's and is now a part of our management team and our band leader. It will be available within the next 2 weeks, when we get it back from the manufacturer. My new year's resolution is to be more organized, stay in contact with friends and family more often, and schedule more shows! David's New Year's resolution is to write more song, and work harder on his organization, "Change For God's Children." As always thanks for your support and loyalty. And thank you for allowing us to keep traditional country music alive! God Bless! David & Terri Lisa Church PS: HELP US GET BOOKED! Here is a Link.
