We had a surprise visit from George Hamilton IV and he sang about 30 minutes for us at the end. I think everyone had a good time and had some great food too. On the eve we enjoyed Boston Butt, BBQ sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, Lasagna, cream cheese pie, pound cake, cookies and assortment of goodies. Dough nuts and hot cocoa was served prior to leaving for the "Midnight in Montgomery". John Wise and the Slim Pickin's band were very good as they performed Hank's tunes along with other traditional music. The Sheppard Family, Arnold Sheppard, Montana and Morgan Brown were at the grave to sing before the service began and they entertained us at the museum after-wards. Roger "Hurricane" Wilson and the Kennesaw Mountain Boys were also great entertainment both days. Karo's Karaoke was a crowd favorite as many sang the country classics throughout the night of the eve. "Midnight in Montgomery" seems to get better each year. We gathered at midnight, held hands around the statue and watched a spectacular fire works show while singing "I Saw The Light". Hank and Cecil were smiling down on us as we said our Happy New Year to each other. NYD 9:45 am the Sheppard Family sang several songs and led us to the ten o'clock hour when Jeff Petty spoke to the crowd about the spirit of Hank Williams, Luke the Drifter. Terry Faust recited his song "Luke the Drifter Did" and blew the crowd away with it. It is printed on the May page of the 2012 calendar. Devona Shoemake was recognized for her, once again beautiful arrangement of flowers for Hank and Audrey's Memorial and Terry Faust for his great dedication in keeping the cemetery clean. He says "just call me the grave-tender". My brother-in-law, David Shoemaker gave the prayer and sermon about the gospel side of Hank. As a tradition we closed the memorial service by all joining in to sing "I Saw The Light". The crowd then gathered at the museum for black eyed-peas, cornbread, Ham, green beans, turnips, collards, mac and cheese, carrot cake, egg custard, cheese cake and all the goodies to go with it. yum yum! Don Lynch played steel guitar while the crowd enjoyed their dinner, then the Sheppard Family played followed by Roger Wilson, Slim Pickin's and then George Hamilton IV. Thanks to all Singers and Musicians! You always do a wonderful job! Many friends meet here each year and many new comers join in the circle of Hank Williams friends. I want to thank each one for making these events so special. We love each and every one of you!! The family from the Hank Williams Museum would like to wish all a very healthy, happy and successful 2012! Beth J. Robert Ackerman Palmer, Alaska -----Original Message----- From: danaptguys@cox.net Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 6:08 AM To: hank1@mtaonline.net Subject: Hank's 88th Birthday Celebration Hi Robert, Attached is revised report of the event in Montgomery. If you want to distribute this to your E-Mail list, it may help in the support of both Hank Museums. Hope all is well, Ed Here is some info on the Hank Williams Birthday Celebration held on Sep 17, 2011 at the remodeled HW Museum in Montgomery, AL: At 8:45am, Fans & Friends gathered at Hank’s Gravesite in the Oakwood Cemetery Annex where wreaths were placed. Music was provided by the Sheppard Family, closing with “I Saw The Light”, and everyone proceeded to the Museum. Although not well-attended, many newspaper writers interview fans at this event (and the New Year’s Celebration) and publish their views on Hank and his music. Had a good crowd for this one-day celebration. Jeff Petty, our splendid MC, was Montgomery’s version of “Cousin Louie Buck”. Music by: Wes Paul Band of Liverpool, England Garrett Miles (AL) Young blind singer with a great voice Andy Norman (AL) Terrific...he can sing anything...voice is perfect Joey Allcorn (GA) Always an up-tempo show Brad Magness & Tammy Sue Hogan (IN) Superb... glad he is back to the Montgomery Show Linda English-Holland (FL) Strong voice sings Hank & Patsy and Gospel songs Braxton Schuffert (AL) 95 years old...Hank's "Big Brother" who was a great influence for 15 year old HW. He closed the show and everyone loved him. Missed some of the regular performers ....Arty Hill and Bobby Yates, Jake Penrod, et al. (Arty was over-booked in either Texas or Brooklyn (:o) ....and Bobby was being inducted into a Country Music Hall of Fame in the Mid-West) Everyone hopes they will return for the 2012 Celebration. Charles Carr graciously signed autographs & posed for photos. Exhibitors included: The Shoe Doctor (Shoe Shine Guy), a Leather Artist, Wood Carving Craftsmen, Brad Magness (Collectibles), HW Fan Club, Montgomery Visitor Center, and Ed Guy (HW Collectibles). (A nice gathering but we would like to see more Collectors to "Show & Tell" (and sell) their Hank artifacts) Food was available and a fantastic Birthday Cake was shared with all. Beth & Jeff Petty, and her Mom (Betty Jackson) and Beth’s family did a great job running the show. Gravesite ceremony took place on Sat 9/17 before the Museum opened. Beth has acknowledged the terrific volunteer work by Terry Faust and Devona Shoemake both in the Museum and at the Gravesite. Beth is leaning toward a bigger event next year (at least 2 days of music) to attract more attendees & exhibitors, as well as performers. (Yeah!!!!) Start planning now for a terrific break from work next September. On a personal note, spent a lot of time with Manfred Reinhard who traveled over from Germany. We spent a day in Meridian, MS visiting Museum and Grave of Jimmie Rodgers. We also visited Braxton Schuffert and spent a good part of a day with him - having lunch and then going up to his house to chat some more. ____________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE Sept 8th, 2011 ATTENTION HANK/COUNTRY MUSIC FANS – Thanks Beth. Thanks Beth. Robert Ackerman Palmer, Alaska ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beth Petty" To: "Robert HANK Ackerman" Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2010 7:30 AM HI Robert, The 2011 Hank Williams Museum Calendar is a tribute to Cecil Jackson. It is $10.00 each plus $3.00 shipping if inside the US and Canada. Please call for shipping charges outside the US and Canada. Order 10 or more and the cost is $8.00 each. Cecil's achievements over the past 20 years are shown throughout the calendar. He accomplished so much for Hank Williams' legacy and memory in those years and we are proud to display his works in series number 9. The title is "The Stranger and the Boy" and has a picture of Hank handing daddy a coke in 1945 when he was 8 years old. Hank never knew the man, he only met the boy, who would later become his number one fan. Hank was merely a stranger to daddy in 1945. He listened to him on the radio but it was the first time to see him in person. That day left a big impact on him. He had several more encounters with Hank for the next 8 years. The story is told inside the calendar. I hope all will enjoy this calendar as much as the ones from the past years. The calendars are going fast so order now before they run out. They make great Christmas gifts! The Museum gift shop also carries many more items for sale. The new tapestry is a must have item for fans. Beth J.
