Abortion: Politically Correct - Morally Incorrect

When does life begin?

Abortion is the termination of pregnancy or full development prematurely. Statistics show that legalized abortion is accepted by fifty percent of Americans. Women can legally abort their unborn child at any time, throughout their entire pregnancy, for any reason.

January 22, 1998 marked the 25th anniversary of the infamous Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion in this country for all nine months of pregnancy- for any reason or for no reason at all. Since then over 35 million babies have been aborted.

Long before we have the opportunity to meet them, human babies are fully developed. Three weeks after conception the heart begins beating; within six to seven weeks brain waves can be detected, all vital organs are present, and fingers and toes can be seen as the baby moves its arms and legs. At nine weeks the baby responds to touch, and its tiny hands can grasp an object, and at sixteen weeks it can hear and recognize its mother's voice.

The first method, which is a saline abortion, is done after sixteen weeks. In this type of abortion, a saline solution (salt poison) is inserted through the abdomen into the bag of water around the baby. Both the inner organs and the baby's outer skin are severely burned. It can take up to two hours for the baby to die. A saline abortion is extremely painful to the unborn baby. Occasionally babies survive saline abortions, but very few live past a few hours because of the extreme damage done to their internal organs.

The most common method of abortion is called the vacuum aspirator abortion; performed from seven to twelve weeks. In this procedure, a hollow, plastic suction tube is inserted into the womb. This suction is 29 times stronger than a household vacuum. As soon as the suction is turned on, the baby is torn from the uterus along with the placenta and sucked through the tube into a canister. The baby is too large to pass through the suction tube, so wherever the suction tip comes in contact with the baby's body, that portion is torn off and suctioned away. To finish this procedure, the doctor uses forceps to crush the baby's skull so that it too can pass through the narrow suction tube. The D & C method is usually done after the vacuum aspirator to remove the remains of the baby.

The D & E (Dilatation & Evacuation) method is done after twelve weeks. In this method, a plier-like tool is used to break the bones of a baby. After this, the baby's arms and legs are torn off and the baby's body is reassembled outside of the mother's body to make sure that the entire baby is completely out.

The final and most gruesome method of abortion is called partial birth abortion. This method is done from five months to full term. In this type of abortion the baby's head is delivered. The doctor then takes an instrument sharper than a knife and makes an incision in the back of the baby's head. The skull is opened and the baby's brain is sucked out; the skull is then crushed, and the baby is disposed of. During a partial birth abortion, the mother is usually put to sleep so that she can't hear her baby cry.

Some other methods of abortion include c-section and abortion with drugs. Both of these cause you to deliver live babies, which are disposed of.

Besides being extremely painful to the baby, abortions will also cause the mother pain. Abortion clinics will tell their patients that they will only feel a slight cramping sensation. Unless the mother is put to sleep during a vacuum aspirator abortion, it will be very painful. A saline abortion is always painful because you go into hard labor for hours or even days before you deliver your dead baby.

Abortions can cause health problems and can also cost the mother her life. One out of every 500 abortions results in death.

The physical pain that is endured by the mother isn't nearly as traumatic as the emotional pain they will experience later in life. This emotional disorder is called Post Abortion Syndrome (PAS). Immediately after the abortion, the mother will usually be relieved that the crisis is over. But any moral struggle she felt prior to the abortion will resurface eventually; this is PAS.

For the woman who has come to believe, at some point after the abortion, that she consented to the killing of her preborn child, the burden of guilt is relentless. Postabortion women with anxiety may experience tension, physical responses such as dizziness, pounding heart, upset stomach, headaches, difficulty concentrating, and disturbed sleep. The conflict between a woman's moral standards and her decision to abort generates much of her anxiety. Some postabortion women experience depression, which may lead to suicidal ideas. Another very common event described by postabortion women is the sudden distressing, recurring flashbacks of the abortion episode. These are just a few of the many emotional responses in women who suffer from PAS.

One out of every three babies conceived are aborted. That's 1.5 million each year, 4,100 each day, and one every 21 seconds. Forty abortions a day are performed on women carrying a child five months or older. Seventy abortions a week are performed in Knoxville alone. Women can have an abortion at any age, but we aren't allowed to drive a car until we're sixteen years old. What's wrong with the morals in this country?

I believe that abortion is murder. It is killing a baby because you're not ready for it or you aren't financially able to take care of it. Furthermore, I believe that abortion is pure cowardice. In my opinion, if you have an abortion it is because you are not brave enough to stick out the pregnancy because you're worried about what people will think. Personally, I don't think it should matter what anyone else thinks because it is none of their business.

When I look around the school each day I see teenagers with babies. I would just like to say that I think teenagers with babies, and even the ones that have given their child up for adoption, are very brave. I would also like to thank them for giving their babies life. I'm not trying to make teen pregnancy seem as if it's no big issue. I just would rather see a teen pregnant than to hear that one had an abortion.

I do not understand how anyone can be so selfish as to not give their baby life. Some people say that they are prolife, which means not supporting abortion or the choice to have an abortion, but they think it is okay to have an abortion if you were raped. Well the truth of the matter is that only one percent of reported abortions are of rape victims. Ninety five percent of all recorded abortions are performed as means of birth control or to end an unwanted pregnancy. The other four percent are because of fetal abnormalities or the mother's health problems.

Doctors will tell women who are considering abortion that the baby is just a blob of tissue or a product of conception. Several years ago scientists did not know if it was truly a baby or not. Yet now, with ultrasound and other methods, they can actually see the unborn baby inside of its mother's womb. Besides, if it is just a blob of tissue, and not a baby, why would you need to kill it?

Some people who could not give their child all the love and attention it deserved might think that abortion is the best way out. Let me assure those people that adoption is a much better solution. There are thousands of people across the country that long for a child but cannot have one. If the women who have abortions would give their babies up for adoption, 1.5 million babies would be given to people who could take care of them. One and a half million babies' lives would be spared.

Basically I am trying to defend the unborn child; the unborn child that can't speak its opinion or say anything to stop what happens to it. Some people may read this story and see the methods of abortions, the results of abortion, and the proof that it really is a baby, and still choose abortion to end an unwanted pregnancy, but if I could save the life of one baby it would be worth all of the work put forth.

"A Baby's Prayer"
Words by Kathy Troccoli.
Music by Scott Brasher.

I can hear her talking with a friend
I think it's all about me
Oh how she can't have a baby now
My mommy doesn't see

That I feel her breathe, I know her voice
Her blood it flows through my heart
God you know my greatest wish is that
We'd never be apart

CHORUS: But if I should die before I wake
I pray her soul you'll keep
Forgive her Lord - she doesn't know
That you gave life to me

Do I really have to say goodbye
Don't want this time to be through
Oh please tell her that I love her Lord
And that you love her too

CHORUS: But if I should die before I wake
I pray her soul you'll keep
Forgive her Lord - she doesn't know
That you gave life to me

On the days when she may think of me
Please comfort her with the truth
That the angels hold me safe and sound
'Cause I'm in Heaven with you
I'm in Heaven with you.

Diary of an Unborn Child

October 5—Today my life began. My parents do not know it yet, I am as small as a seed of an apple, but it is I already. And I am to be a girl. I shall have blond hair and blue eyes. Just about everything is settled though, even the fact that I shall love flowers.

October 19—Some say that I am not a real person yet, that only my mother exists. But I am a real person, just as a small crumb of bread is yet truly bread. My mother is. And I am.

October 23—My mouth is just beginning to open now. Just think, in a year or so I shall be laughing and later talking. I know what my first word will be: MAMA.

October 25—My heart began to beat today all by itself. From now on it shall gently beat for the rest of my life without ever stopping to rest! And after many years it will tire. It will stop, and then I shall die.

November 2—I am growing a bit every day. My arms and legs are beginning to take shape. But I have to wait a long time yet before those little legs will raise me to my mother’s arms, before these little arms will be able to gather flowers and embrace my father.

November 12—tiny fingers are beginning to form on my hands. Funny how small they are! I’ll be able to stroke my mother’s hair with them.

November 20—It wasn’t until today that the doctor told mom that I am living here under her heart. Oh, how happy she must be! Are you happy, mom?

November 25—My mom and dad are probably thinking about a name for me. But they don’t even know that I am a little girl. I want to be called Kathy. I am getting so big already.

December 10—My hair is growing. It is smooth and bright and shiny. I wonder what kind of hair mom has.

December 13—I am just about able to see. It is dark around me. When mom brings me into the world it will be full of sunshine and flowers. But what I want more than anything is to see my mom. How do you look, mom?

December 24—I wonder if mom hears the whispering of my heart? Some children come into the world a little sick. But my heart is strong and healthy. It beats so evenly: tup-tup,tup-tup. You’ll have a healthy little daughter, mom!

December 28—Today my mother killed me.

Biblical proof that life begins at conception:
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;" Psalm 139:13-14

"As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things." Ecclesiastes 11:5

"This is what the Lord says--he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you" Isaiah 44:2

"Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me." Psalm 51:5

"To fail on this question of abortion will be the failure of the greatest moral test of the century. This could be the last chance for Christians to stop our society from becoming totally secular and humanistic. If Christians do not take this opportunity to lead, I doubt we will get another."
Francis Schaeffer

Thomas Jefferson said:
"The care of human life and not its the first and only legitimate object of good government."
