Scarborough is a small but growing town on the outskirts of Maine's largest city, Portland. It is 54 square miles and consists of rural, residential and business districts. It was incorporated in 1654 and growing ever since.

Scarborough has a fulltime police force consisting of anywhere between 5 and 7 officers on the roads at a time. They are dispatched from the Public Safety building located in the center of town by Motorola Consoles. Their dispatch center is manned 24 hours a day by at least 2 dipstchers with access to the Maine DMV compter and their own in-house computer as well as NCIC.

The public safety dispatchers also dispatch fire/rescue. The rescue is covered by 2 paramedics out of 2 centrally located stations. They are partnered with per diem EMT's 24 hours a day also. Scarborough has daytime firefighters in each of thier 6 stations. The day firefighters work a schedule of 0730 to 1630 hours, 7 days a week complimented by the call force. Between the hours of 1630 and 0730 the next day, it is call force that responds.

The Scarborough Fire Department is made up of the following: 6 Front line pumpers (1 spare pumper), 2 Utility Trucks(towing boats, EMS runs, Brush fires), 2 Aerial Ladders, 3 Ambulances, 2 Marine Boats, Service Truck, Chiefs Car, EMS Directors Car, Command Van, Squad Truck (Extrication and HAZMAT equipment is on this truck) and 1 Shared Tank Truck (The tank is shared by Scarborough and Gorham Fire but housed in a Scarborough station).

Other Information

Scarborough is a summer resort town. There are a lot of out-of-state people who live and visit Scarborough during the summer months and then return to their other homes when the winter comes. There are quite a few places to visit in Scarborough. Beaches are plentiful. Boat access is very easy also with 2 ramps, one located on Route 207 (Black Point Road) and the other on Route 9 (Pine Point Road). Eating in Scarborough can be good also. There are several restaurants in town. The Clambake (Route 9, Pine Point Road) is a favorite for the residents and tourists alike. Betty's Restaurant is a place to get 10¢ burgers and good conversation and maybe even a llittle gossip about the town goings on. Betty's is a Scarborough landmark and is located next to the Oak Hill Fire Station on US Route 1. You in the mood for Chinese food? The best I have found in the greater Portland area is at the Happy Garden. The portions are huge and the price is right. Those are just a few of the many things Scarborough has to offer. So if you are traveling through there, stop in and visit one of the many fine places.
