Audiogliphix Magazine Review 1999

Bassist: David Dyson
CD: "Soulmates", Lo'hand Funk Records

You're going to like this one. David Dyson is a jazz bassist from Maryland whose persona reminds me of Stanley Clarke and Gerald Veasley. Dyson's independent solo project appears to be a jazz album, but he's chosen to take a decidedly hip hop approach to it. The lead track, "95 North" is a bass heavy, beat laden attack that could easily find its way into your groove zone. On "Way Back When", Dyson gives props to all the bands his parents took him to see as a youth. And believe it, Dyson drops a few obscure names as well as the usual round of influences. Up to this point Dyson's claim to fame has been his work with Me'shell NdegeOcello. "Soulmates" will propel him into the ranks of soloist and no doubt increase value as a session musician and composer. Dyson not only plays bass, but keys, drum programming, sampling and vocals. This is an A+ effort.
