Early Gleanings and Random Recollections of the Town of Corinth, Maine from 1792 to 1883

By Mason S. Palmer

Originally published in 1883 at the press of B.A. Burr, at the Whig and Courier Job Office in Bangor, Maine, this account of the early days of Corinth’s history is finally in its second printing, thanks to the Corinth Historical Society, Inc.

Retypeset by Sharon Buswell, one hundred and twenty years after its initial appearance, this authentic document is a fascinating look into lives of the Founders of this town.  This nineteenth century original, which is “bristling with punctuation,” remains, to date, the only published history of the Town of Corinth, and is certain to delight the discerning twenty-first century reader.

Mason S. Palmer, former town clerk ca. 1831, recounts the history of the Corinth area from “the early ages of mankind” to 1792, when settlers of European descent first arrived.  Palmer takes us on a journey through time to the incorporation of the town in 1820 and to a period where he, as a conservationist, fought to save the Maine pines.  A teacher, former Registrar of Probate for Penobscot County, and head of Katahdin Iron Works, this eighty-year old resident of the town introduces us to his friends and neighbors.

The Corinth Historical Society is proud to reintroduce this compelling document into the hands of Corinth residents and those of anyone interested in the history of the area, as it was seen over a century ago.
