I know when I was younger I used to think that church was boring as many children do. Many people see it as an hour of time that could be better spent on something else. But what is better than getting to know the life of Jesus? It is through Him that we can learn about His Father, our Creator. God has a manual to life that He gave to us. It’s called the Bible. And for one hour a week we can gather together and hear the stories that will get us through life. There’s 168 hours in a week and I don’t know about you, but one hour just doesn’t seem like enough. Being a member of the church doesn’t mean just coming to mass once a week. You have to take what you learn and put it into action throughout your life.
I was in my religion class the other day and we were talking about going to church and the feeling that we get when we’re there. I was a little disappointed because most of my class is Catholic and they don’t go to church anymore because they say they don’t get anything out of it. I’m one of those people that never talks in class, but for some reason that day something inside me told me to speak. I knew I had to give my experience of church because the other students needed to hear that church could actually be exciting. So, I explained to them that when you go to church you have to go with an open mind. You can’t go and expect it to be boring because then it will be. If you leave your mind open then God can fill it with exactly what He wants you to hear. I think it’s amazing how two people can be hearing the exact same thing, and yet they each get something totally different out of it.
Going to church allows God to work through each and every one of us. I know that going through high school can bring a lot of stress upon you. I was praying a lot through my high school years, but you know what helped me even more? Going to church and realizing that I have a community that is there for me. I am with a group of people who have the same beliefs and care for me. If you want to get something out of church you have to get involved. Joining the youth group was probably one of the best things I ever did. I met a great group of people who were always there for me. I was able to learn about my faith and share it freely. Now that I’m in college I cherish that time in youth group and in church. Being in college you are surrounded by so many different beliefs and you have to be strong. You can’t go into college unsure of your faith because you will come out with a mix of beliefs.
That’s why it is so important to go to church and learn about God. Life will throw you obstacles and God wants to be there to help you through them. But you have to make the first step and go to His house, the church. He always has an open invitation for you, but you have to accept it. Church should be a part of your life if you want God to be a part of your life. And trust me, you want God to be part of your life. And you know what’s even better? He wants to be part of yours.
Who is God in my life? Well, I can think of a lot of things God is. According to the Bible, it says that God is a Healer, a Comforter, our shelter from the rain, our refuge from the storm, our rock, our strength, the bread of life, the light of the world, the salt of the earth, and so much more. But who is God in my life? He definitely is all of these things, but what is he to me personally?
I have a shirt that says Jesus is my answer and my lifeline. My lifeline? I never really thought about it like that, but it’s true. He is my lifeline. Who watches the show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire or at least has heard of it? I was thinking about how I could relate the show to my life. And which lifeline God is like. First of all, for those of you who have seen the show, you know that you have to answer a series of questions. These questions gradually get harder and the contestant is working towards the million dollars.
Life can be compared to this situation. We all face decisions in our life and as we get older these decisions seem to become more difficult. Everyone will have different choices to make in life and some choices may be harder for one person than they are for someone else. However, we should all be working towards the same goal. Instead of a million dollars our goal should be towards Christ and the Kingdom of God.
Now we come to the lifelines. In the show there’s ask the audience, 50/50, and phone a friend. In the show the audience isn’t always right, except maybe on the easy questions. Ask the audience can be related to society and our friends. They may give us a variety answers to our questions, but they may not always be right. With 50/50 you get one right answer and one wrong answer. In life this can be compared to our conscious. It’s like those cartoons that show a character with a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. The devil and angel argue over what the character should do. Even though a decision may be narrowed down to two choices, it can still be very difficult to choose the right one.Now we’re down to the phone a friend. On the show this can be very helpful if one of your friends knows the answer. But again, this lifeline isn’t a sure guarantee because you’re friends don’t always know the answers. In life I like to think of my phone a friend as God. I know he has all the answers so I have nothing to lose. Why is it that we seem to go to our friends or ourselves for answers before we go to God? He’s always there with all the right answers. When you think about it, it’s not that hard of a decision.
I admit in the past I have looked to other sources than God for my answers. But let me tell you something, God is the only one who knows who we are and what our future holds. So, doesn’t it make sense to go to Him before we make any decisions? God has helped me so much in the past and I trust that He will be there for me in the future. Everyday He is helping me to reach that goal of His Kingdom. He wants to help all of you get there too. So, I encourage you to make God your phone a friend. Call on Him in your time of need, but also give Him a ring just to say “what’s up?” and thank Him for all that He has done. He can’t wait to hear from you.
I am safe in Heaven now, As you mourn. You wonder why you did it, As do I.
It’s been a year and I Could have been with you, Learning to walk, talk, And having you sing me to sleep.
I am safe in Heaven now, As you sit alone. You did it for him because he loved you. Well, I still love you, but where is he?
I remember that day. The day You decided to play God. Full of fear you were, Only thinking of yourself.
I am safe in Heaven now, Thinking of you, Mother. I was your hope for a family, But that too is gone.
I didn’t know what was happening. I recall the physical pain, that Many do not know. That’s right, I felt pain so that you may be happy.
I am safe in Heaven now, And you don’t seem happy. Are those tears in your eyes? Do you miss me, now that it’s too late?
Mother, If only you had thought More about your decision. Maybe your days of sorrow Would be fewer.
I am safe in Heaven now, As you weep. Wishing you could go back in time, You continuously pray.
There was a plan for me. I was meant to be someone, Not only your child, but So much more.
I am safe in Heaven now, Watching over you. What you did was wrong, But God will forgive you.
