Akudia : Life Of A Typical Malay - Oct 2000

Sunday 8/10

> Heh, nak tergelak pulak aku dengan Contractors ni...

Chong saw me having breakfast at one of the stalls near the site this morning, he was a bit surprised (but happy) I guess. I headed to the site office and spent the first few minutes reading newspapers, then they started to ask me to do the inspection. And they thought I was still angry with what happened yesterday, their bosses were at the office this morning - the R.E had a fight with one of the sub-contractors, he slapped him n the face, I nearly peed in my pants when I heard that from Kamal, my C-o-W. That was terribly funny.

Agreed to have the works inspected, so together with Chong and the electrical contractor we went up to Level 18, Block B. Spent almost an hour up there, it was hot and we were sweating all over. Satisfied with the works, I asked them to proceed with concreting works.

Ah Heng came to see me and we chatted for over an hour, he jokingly thanked me for humiliating him, he was screwed by his boss and the Main Contractor. Hmmm...did I humiliate him? I don't think so....Anyway, he asked me to join him for lunch at one Japanese Restaurant at MegaMall, MidValley City.

Thanks but I'm going for a movie in 20 minutes.

> Left for KL after Zohor, had lunch at Plaza Putra. The show started exactly at 3 o'clock, saw Huzir Sulaiman (again?) and Na'a Murad (he played the other Baroness in Charley's Auntie) among the audience.

The play, inspired by a true story of a Cape Malay South African woman - about faith, hope and courage.

I need to sit down and take a rest. But I can't because, well, the benches say, "Sleg Blankes/For Whites Only". So I collapse exhausted on the sidewalk instead.

Jo Kukathas received standing ovation for her splendid performance.

> Drove back to the site, did some filing works and logged on to the net about Maghrib. Then together with Kamal we went for dinner at one Kelantanese restaurant at the back of the project site. Concreting was still progressing when I left the site at 10-30 pm.

Monday 9/10

> Took the new M&E C-o-W to the site after giving him some briefing, uh God, this guy speaks with a very thick Java accent, he's a Malaysian of Indonesian origin. By the way, he very much reminds me of Abang The, my brother in law, he's orak eneng punya gang jugak.

-----------------------

> You know (hmmm...dia buat dah....heh.. it's become pointless when you sit here, hating this box that will destroy your hands and your eyes, but you can't think of anything better to do. Better yet, you go out of your way to use it; Why? Because, you can't bear to go out. Outside, where there is no one to talk to anymore, where there is nothing you really care about these days.

Everything that really mattered walked out, and I know it. But for some stupid reasons I keep telling myself that something will come along that I'll give a shit about.

Damn stupid this Zainal guy.

> Hmmm...just a short entry, I'm feeling sleepy and tired after a few rounds climbing both Block A & B today, and now CSCE Coffee is trading sideways I ......

Ohhh....I went there just now, the link worked fine, anyway try this.

Tuesday 10/10

> Last night was such a boring night at the office, New York CSCE and London LIFFE traded within such tight ranges, lots of traders were taking day off in observation of Yom Kippur and Columbus Day Holidays I guess.

I spent my hours following this famous New York Taxi, on a webcam, to the streets of New York City and at the same time staring at this loch (Scottish for lake) hoping to spot Nessie, Loch Ness Monster. It was cool to be in 2 different places at the same time, in New York, USA and Drumnadochit, Inverness, Scotland. WebCameras always fascinate me by the way.

---------------------

> Our biweekly Site Meeting was chaired by Calvin, the Architect, he made it such a very short one. Too much of talking doesn't do any good, he said.

> Feeling sleepy, I took a nice slow walk to Block A, went up to Level 12, a bit quiet because most of the activities are at the top floor. I just walked from one unit to another, not inspecting anything, just passing my time. Zainal, you always cut a lone figure, I had that words in my head. I just smiled, what's wrong with that? I'm feeling ok, that's all that matters.

...and I found myself singing the song (Dust In The Wind - the background music of this journal) over and over again....and yes, happiness isn't getting what you want......

I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind, ohh.....

> 7-20 pm - and I'm still at the site office, concreting works is still in progress and will only finish well after midnight. I don't think I'll be in Subang Jaya tonight, I've just checked London LIFFE, coffee ain't moving. Anyway, I'll be online to monitor both New York CSCE and London LIFFE.

Ohhh...I'm going to follow that yellow taxi cab again...heh...oh no, I better read the Quran, I haven't done so for days now and I've started listening to the music again while driving. Entahlah, hangat-hangat taik ayam betullah aku ni. Itu pasal hidup aku minggu ni tak aman jer.....

Wednesday 11/10

> It's funny to know some guys who work at laundry shops hate to do ironing. I clearly told them to have (at least) my shirts ironed when I sent my laundry yesterday. But when I cme for collection this morning, the girl merely said sorry but we only have one lady to do the ironing works, the rest (3 guys) are not interested in doing this kind of task. And I was left with cleaned but unironed shirts (14) and pants (6). I hate to do ironing too...

> Was at Block B with one of the Contractor staff this morning, just some routine check, lots of black scorpions here, almost in every room, under the staircases too...

Black scorpions? Really? Where?, he went into one of the rooms and came out seconds later holding his nose.

Shit! They (the workers) shit in here!

Yeah, black scorpions, I said to him with a big smile on my face. I hate it when the workers (mostly Indonesians and Bangladeshis) just do their business wherever they like. Itu pasal Bangladesh selalu banjir kot? Nak bersihkan taik?

> The GM (Mr Kong) called me this afternoon, he wanted to know about the Sunday incident. Apparently, the Contractor called him that night with their side of the story. I told him mine. Good, Zainal, you have to teach them a lesson or two.

> Took a spin around Pantai Dalam during lunch hour, I ended up at one kawasan setinggan Sting Gardens near Kampung Abdullah Hukum. What a sight!

> There is this bubbly personality big fat "healthy" girl working as a Secretary at the main Contractor office. She's such a character, she jokes about almost everything and she always makes me laugh. Her name is Grace, one of these days I'll secretly snap her pics and have them posted here. Just don't be surprised, she's big. This big!

> The QS, Haji Hanafiah was at the site for site valuation for about an hour. Lucky he was a bit tired to go climb the 2 blocks, so we went to the canteen and did the calculations from there.

Kalau aku, aku lempang jer contractor tu

... Then dia lempang aku balik....

> I wanted to leave for Subang Jaya at 5-00 pm but Zuraimi was at the office until 6-00 pm. Logged on to the net to check London LIFFE, then I felt a bit sleepy, took a nap and woke up just before Maghrib. Tried to be online to check for some coffee news but the line was so awfully slow, aku rasa, tunggu janda lagi cepat I packed my stuff and headed for Subang Jaya.

After ordering nasi goreng ayam at Mr's RR Cafe, I went up to the office and set my laptop up. Discussed with Abang Wan about GCA stocks which to me is showing it's bullish side, no doubt daily stocks keep increasing (3.68 million bags of Arabica coffee in various warehouses in the US) but the amount to be graded had for the past weeks decreased drastically, from over 200,000 bags a month ago to only 25,000 bags yesterday. That we have to watch out.

Told him about my intention of going long (buy a contract), he agreed, but when the market gapped up I just sat there hoping for the price to retrace. It did not retrace but instead climbed to one-month high. About 11-24 pm, there were 2 slightly bulish news being posted on bridge.com, back to back. The 4 of us, me, Bob, Haji Hashim and Kak Siti decided to enter positions. They went long when the price started to climb but I waited a bit longer, about 20 minutes later I decided to get in, I got better price, 0.05 point lower then what they got, then the prices started to play sideways and dipped by 0.50 point. Towards the end the markets became choppy and we decided to close our positions, with profits of 0.60 point each. Mine was 0.65 point. Everybody was happy and we stayed even after trading hours to check on weather patterns across South America.
Thursday 12/10
> Why did I fart online until 4-30 am last night/this morning I don't know. I should have just gone home but instead I surfed a few websites checking for any major events sometimes between 29th Oct to 4th Nov 2000 in New York/ Boston/ Washington DC/ Atlantic City and a few other surrounding cities. Thank God there are no major concerts within these dates, Bon Jovi are playing on Nov 8th, Paul Simon, Limp Bizkit & Eminem are touring northeastern states until end of the year, none of them is my cup of tea so I can now safely say that I won't be going for any concerts.

> My morning inspection lasted less than an hour, spent the rest of the morning in the cabin checking some plans/drawings, the Main Contractor to start building the Club House soon so I better study the details before it's too late.

> Took a nap during lunch hour (12 noon) and when I woke up I thought it was 12-45 pm (but it was 1-45 pm) no wonder I felt so fresh even after having a few minutes sleep.

> Went for lunch at that stall that plays Malay music of the bygone era, heh....itu pasal stall ni ramai orang tua datang makan kot?...

> me,myself & I emailed me this afternoon (she's back...heh...) asking me why didn't I go to the wedding khenduri in Raub (my hometown, and her hubby's too) instead. I checked the card again, I was not invited to the khenduri in Raub (well, she did not write my name on the dotted line), I was only invited to the khenduri in Cheras...opppsss...KL. She also asked me to please, please, please have her hubby's name deleted from my past journal entry....hmmm....now, what do I do? Well, I don't edit past entries, tengoklah, kalau aku ingat aku padamkan nama tu, mintak-mintak aku lupalah...heh..

> I also received another mail from someone I don't know, she/he suggested I put my latest entry at the top of the page, just to make it easier for us readers, he/she said. Buat masa ni, cadangan tu ditolak bulat-bulat, akan datang tu tak tahulah. Aku "suka tengok" kalau orang tu masuk my journal thru' the main page, lepas tu klik "next" dua tiga kali, scroll, scroll, scroll.... tengok-tengok, aku belum update lagi. *Beep*, dia tak update lagilah, tapi dia online sekarang nih...Kejap lagi kot? So she/he has to do it all over again a few minutes later. But I know some of the readers who visit this journal thru' the back door, that's perfectly ok with me. Baca aku punya sick joke pasal "back door" dalam entry lama, heh...

Sometimes I don't really understand it, why do you guys have to come here every day? I mean, you can come here once a week, or even once a month, but why every day? Every single day? I just write what's in my head, that's all. And I'm writing this for myself. I don't even care to check my spelling, and my grandma even.....

There are lots of other journals out there on the internet worth reading.

> Aku beli 3 ekor ayam panggang kat Pantai Dalam tadi, bawak office, syok jugak makan ramai-ramai masa trading, yang tak syoknya kitaorang tak masuk positions pun, coffee tumbled by more that 4 points, yesterday's rally was not real.
