September's Theme: Civic Ideals, Practices & Engagement

NH State Standard Theme: Civic Ideals, Practices and Engagement

"This theme explores such essential questions as: What is civic participation and how can I be involved? What is the role of the citizen in the community and in the nation, and as a member of the world community? How has the meaning of citizenship evolved over time?" (NH Dept. of Education)

The month of September will be dedicated to the study of Citizenship. Specifically, we will examine the purpose and role of being a citizen in the United States as well as in other nations and regions of the world. We will also directly address how we, as a class, and as individuals, can make a difference in our own community. The evolution of the definition of citizenship in America will be examined. We will study the Bill of Rights and how they define the rights of individuals in our society. Finally, we will examine significant court cases that have helped define the meanings of our freedoms as so hoped for by the Founding Fathers.
