God Will Provide Himself A Lamb

Gen. 22:8

by Billy Kellough

Gen. 22: "And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together."

Introduction: It is amazing that everything in the New Testament is previewed in the Old Testament. Before us is an astounding record of God making an unusual request of Abraham, who is considered a Friend of God.

NOTICE: God set out to prove Abraham - Gen 22:1

I. GOD'S COMMAND: (vs 2)

A. Take thy only son whose name is Isaac

B. Go to the land of Moriah

C. Offer him for a burnt offering

1. This was the main point of his temptation, seeing he was commanded to offer up him in whom God had promised to bless all the nations of the world.

II. ABRAHAM'S COMPLIANCE: (vss 3-6)

A. Abraham's faith was strong enough that he did not question God.

B. He went to the land of Moriah which was a three days journey from where he lived

III. ISAAC'S COMTEMPLATION: (vss 7-8)

A. Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the sacrifice?

B. Abraham - God will provide HIMSELF a sacrifice.

C. What was God up to?

1. Proving Abraham's faith

2. The Father is walking through the day that His only begotten Son would come to this mountain to offer himself as sacrifice for mankind.

IV. ABRAHAM'S AND ISAAC'S CAPITULATION: (vs 8)

A. So they went both of them together.

B. Abraham builds this altar and binds his son.

1. To this point Isaac represents Christ.

2. Now on the altar his natural state as a sinner

C. God stays Abraham's hand from doing injury to Isaac

V. COMMUTATION - A ram caught in the bushes:

A. That ram is one who took the place of another.

1. This ram which died in Idaac's place is a wonderful picture of Jesus who died for us.

B. John the Baptist cried, John 1:29, 36

C. Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures

CONCLUSION: "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." - Romans 3:23. Notice I Cor 5:7.
