A Lingering Father Gen. 13:5-12; 19:16


Introduction:
A. 2 Pet. 2:6-8: "…and delivered just Lot…"
1. "Vex" - annoy, disturb. Trouble
2. "Linger" - continue t stay, as reluctance to leave; unnecessarily slow to do something
B. Lot did not approve of what was going on in Sodom - at first
1. While his "soul was vex" - Yet he lingered
C. Notice:
I. LOT'S WORLDLINESS:
A. Lot put money ahead of his family: - Gen 13:10
1. Cry today, "make all you can' - that is idoltary
a. money dethrones Christ
b. Enslaves a believer
c. leads to compromise
2. Believer should "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God…" Matt 6:33
3. If you are traveling the road of "make all you can, at the job business, etc - make an idol of it: NOTE Matt 6:25; Psa 37:3
a. You are traveling the road that ruined Lot
b. Lose your influence, joy, souls of family
B. Lot called the wicked his brother: Gen 19:7
1. Lot never intended to move into Sodom
2. Lot's conscience was dulled - no longer offended
a. Samson
b. David
c. Peter
3. Lot had no business in Sodom calling them brethren
a. bad company, unequal yoke - it ruined Lot
4. Lot should have witnessed against their sins and warned
a. Today, we join organizations with unsaved, call them brethren.
C. Lot let the world get his children: Gen 19:8
1. His children married in Sodom
2. He took his daughters out of Sodom, but not Sodom out of his daughters.
a. Lost to respect
b. Lost to morality
c. Lost to God
3. He was "vex" in spirit, but he stayed to make money
4. He put spiritual welfare behind everything else
a. He let down the bars of separation
b. He gave up the standards of separation
c. He permitted his daughters to marry the unsaved
NOTE: Cowardice of parents: Fear the neighbors, relatives. On every hand we see parents compromising with the world; lowering their standards; letting down the bars of separation.
D. Lot fell into the habit of Sodom: Gen 19:32
1. When he went into Sodom he did not drink; but he did when he came out
II. LOT WAS POWERLESS:
A. Notice his influence in:
1. Regard to men of Sodom: Men who drink cannot win drinking buddies; Girl who dances cannot win boy who dances
2. Regard to Sons-In-Laws - Gen 19:14 - They went to hell because Lot sold out his influence
3. Regard to his Wife: Gen 19:26 - No man ought to live where his wife will not follow anywhere for God; No woman, a Christian, should live to where she has no power to win her husband
4. Regard to his Daughters
a. most real sin of Lots:
1) lost his touch with God
2) lost his influence with daughters
3) did not have the marks of a Christian
4) did not have the joy of a Christian
5) did not have the fruit of a Christian
6) did not have the power of a Christian
