McCune & Howlett Descendants



JOHN MCEWEN is the founder of the family in America.
Born in Scotland 1734 He came to America some time between 1734 and 1755, he settled in West Hanover, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
He married Eleanor Jane Mccullough 1755 place unknown.
They had Nine children Margart, Mary, Elizabeth, Jean Jane, Eleanor, John, James, Richard (direct Descendant ) & Thomas.

Richard married Sarah Sally date unknown, they moved from Dauphin County to Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Richard & Sarah had Five children John (direct Descendant ), Sarah, Robert G, William & Eleanor. They migrated to Centerville, Mongomery County, Ohio.

John married Margaret Bingham on September 19, 1822 in Centerville, Mongomery County, Ohio. They had One children born in Ohio Eleanor and then they migrated to Lawrence County, Indiana and had two more children Robert (direct Descendant ) & John Wesley. Margaret died shortly after having her third children. John and the three children migrated to Hancock County, Illinois.

Robert married Elizabeth Forbes on July 01, 1856 in Schyuler County, Illinois. They had Eight children Andrew Jackson, John Dilling, William Thomas, George Lee, Charles Wesley, Alvin Harry, Robert & JamesStover(direct Descendant). Robert change the spelling of McEwen to McCune. This information is not accurate (Then Robert married Sarah Range on October 22, 1890 in Adams County, Illinois. He & Sarah had Four children Charles W, Grover, Ralph & Edith.)

James Stover married Emma Lutz on October 10, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. They dad Five Children Lynn H, Henry, Eva, Robert & Earl. James was a retired farmer around the West Point area and had lived in Quincy, Illinois for 10 years before his death in 1948.



NICHLAS MUFFLI is the founder of the family in America.
Born in Switzerland 1700
He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 31, 1737, on the ship "WILLIAM" from Rotterdam. He signed his name in German Niclaus Mufli, the name in German means "Chubby Cheeked". He appears to have been a man of some means and Education as well refinement, in the ship passenger list he was listed as a cabin passenger. He became a Naturalized Colonist and took the oath of allegiance to the King of Great Britain.
He settled in Germantown, now know as Philadelphia. Later he moved to Buck County, He came alone to America so presume he was unmarried. Apparently he married some "fair maiden" from Philadelphia Miss Wynant. They had four children Peter(direct Descendant). Joseph, Christian & an unknown Daughter.

Peter served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Captain F. Coon's company, Lt. Col. Kerns regiment.
He married Catherine Reginia Wanamaker, they had Four children: Peter, John, Mariah and Henry (direct Descendant). Peter died in Towamensing Township, Northampton County now Carbon County,Pennsylvania on March 25, 1816. He, his wife, son, Nicholas and his wife are all buried in the old Towamensing Burial Ground attached to the Old Towamensing Lutheran Church near Seliegh Gap, Carbon County Pennsylvania.

Henry married Julia Walker in 1794, they had Sixteen children Daniel, Unnamed, Elizabeth, Sammual, Isaac, Israel, Nancy, Catherine, William, Chrissie, Hettie, Eliza, James, Lucas Henry(direct Descendant),Julia & Mary.

Lucas Henry married Nancy Davis Eckerton March 02, 1832 in Washington Furnace, Pennsylvania, they had Twelve children Theophilus (direct Descendant), William Thomas, Annie, Joseph Robert, Sidney Theodore, James Henry, Julia, Mary Jane, Israel Putnam, Harriet Eliza, John Donaghy & Alfred Bryson,

Theophilus left Pennsylvania and settled in Burlington, Iowa for a time, that is where he met his wife Margaret Jerusha Byam, they were married April 09, 1862 in Bellefountain, Iowa. Their first child was born in Burlington,Iowa Charles Sidney August 22, 1863.
Departing Burlington, Iowa the next year for Montana, the route traveled was across the plains via Bridger Cut-off, arriving in Virginia City July 10, 1864.
Theophilus & Margaret had Four more children in Montana Don, Frances, Anna Marie & Lorenzo L (direct Descendant). Theophilus was Lawyer by profession, was president of Madison County Pioneers, 1889 and Sec. of Society of Montana Pioneer, 1896-1898.(from "Montana Pioneers" Vol 1). From "Montana , Its Stort & Biography" - Lawyer - among those who arrived in Montana about the same time of its organization as a territory, one of the lawyers that was at opening of the District Count of the Judicial District, 1st Monday of December 1864 at Planters House dining room corner of Idaho & Jackson Sts, in Virginia City Obit, Madisonian January 1, 1887 to December 30, 1898. Was Mason before he came to Montana and had Masonic connections in Virginia City and Helena. Became member of the Bar 1888. Had been clerk of Court, Attorney. Register in Bankruptcy. Probate Judge, Justice of Peace and Police Magistrate.
He and father-in-law Don Byam owner various mining claims around V.C. Nov. 29, 1870 he bought property, Lot 1, Blk. l98, 25 ft. front on Idaho St..extending back to alley for $500(From Madison City Courthouse files). Theophilus was a partner in the law firm., Sterling & Muffly (1891-1984)in Helena Montana.
Died at Helena home, funeral at 2PM Sep. Burial at (Forestvale) cemetery by side of his daughter (Ann) who died a few years before.

Lorenzo became a Pharmacist at the age of 21, moved to Quincy, Illinois in 1903.
Lorenzo married Louise Mae Conover on June 27, 1906 in Quincy, Illinois. They had three children Anna Marie, Margaret Anna & Mary Louise (direct Descendant).
He owned and operated a Drug Store on North 5th. until his retirement in 1957.
The MUFFLY and ECKERT history that this information comes from, was written by J R Muffly with this inscription "To my brother-Theo, Muffly, Esq, this volume of our family genealogical records to which I devoted many of my leisure hours for several years is affectionaly presanted. Dated July 2nd, 1890, Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

WILLIAM AUGUST KRETZER is the founder of the family in America. Born in Germany March 27, 1871 He came to America some time between 1887 and 1895, he settled in Mendon, Adams County, Illinois. William August married Anna Caroline Maria Montag on February 27, 1896 in Adams County, Illinois. William & Anna had Eight children: Edward August, August William, Ella Mabel, Catherine, Emma Ida Sophie, Marguerite, Carl John & Julius Henry.
