WELL HERE I AM AGAIN

A LITTLE MORE POETRY

SONG OF THE VOYAGEUR

Oh mighty river, bold and wide, why do you run away,
why don`t you stop and linger, why don`t you stop and play?
But who lays blame, as you rush on? I know it won`t be I.
As crystals form upon the trees, and snow swirls in the sky.

If I could run away with you, to lands of endless sun,
Where waters lap upon the shores, and nights are filled with fun.
I`d join you this minute. But river, you`re not wise,
foolish river, you are bound for seas of snow and ice.

Though` your waters` stilled as it turns firm. I still hear your restless soul,
for `neath your face of forming ice you rush to seas of cold.
Where icebergs wait beneath the calm. A threat to fools like me,
Who taunt the hungry waters, as we sail the mighty seas.

Why not be like the wild goose, who leaves this frozen land,
And flies towards the swaying palms, to bask on sun drenched sands
But I know I`ll come away with you, Though my heart longs for the sun.
But mighty river, I hear your call, for you and I are one.

Here is a poem I wrote for my grandaughter Mackenzie Carolyn Hawkins.
A Lullaby

Fly away in dreams my child, close your sleepy eyes.
The sun has gone to rest my sweet, the stars light up the skies.
Go climb the highest mountains, go sail the seven seas
Sail to lands where Palm trees sway, tossed by the balmy breeze.

Dance to sounds of drumbeats, in skirts made out of grass.
Or walk the Scottish highlands,my bonnie little lass.
Climb the Himalayas, where the wind blows night and day,
Or visit lands of snow and ice, where Reindeer prance and play.

Or fly away to Timbucktu, where Camels roam the land
And landscapes change from day to day, with burning, drifting sand.
Fly to lands where monkeys play, among the trees so high,
Where animals with necks so long, They almost touch the sky.

Or dive in waters clear and warm, where flying fishes play,
Or go to lands of ice and snow, where it`s dark both night and day.
Yes, fly among the stars my sweet, catch a comets tail.
Bounce on clouds lined in gold, slide down a rainbows` trail.

And while you fly where Eagles soar, I`ll sing to you this song.
`Til you return to me my babe, with the mornings` dawn.

here is a poem I wrote at the birth of my grandson
Dane Robert Hawkins

PRECIOUS GIFT

A gift supreme sent by God, I hold gently in my arms.
For months I've held you `neath my heart, safe from cold and harm.
I gaze in awe---a tiny son, a miracle it seems,
I could not have asked for treasures more, in my grandest dreams.

I gently kiss his little face, kiss tears from dampened cheeks,
I hold him gently to my breast, for the nourishment he seeks.
He smells of springtime, fresh and new, of flowers after rain.
Gone like a blinking of the eye, the months of doubt and pain.

"Oh God" I pray, "Guide him each day, make him wise and strong,
Please help me God, to guide his path, and teach him right from wrong.
And as he grows and spreads his wings, I`ll beg, please let this child stay,
In my arms and in my heart, If just for one more day.

But birds must fly and flowers die, and warm rains turn to snow.
And as I know my love will stay, I also know my son will go.
I whisper to my little one, "Though I can't shelter you from pain,
But if lifes` journey gets too much. The hills too steep to climb,
I know the love I give you now, will transcend all of time.
If friends forsake you, turn their backs, be brave for I`ll be here.
You may not see me, nor hear my voice, but you will feel me near.

But for now my darling, close your eyes.
Dream dreams of innocence sublime,
And I will thank God once again,
For his wondrous gift divine.
