Sir, you are hereby notified as an adult & as one of the Heirs & legal distributions of John Lawless Est. of said State & County deceased that I shall apply to the next Superior Court to be held in & for said County on the first Monday in November next for the appointment of Commissioners to administer lay off & assign dower to me as the widow & relict of said deceased in Lot of Land No. 43, number forty three situated lying & being in the third District of said State & County containing 202 1/2 acres more or less & also in Lot or tract of Land 80/42; Number 42 situated lying & being in the District County & State aforesaid being the North half of Said Lot or tract of land last aforesaid containing 101 1/4 acres more or less agreeably to the statutes in such case made & provided this the 26th day of Sept. 1849.

Catherine (Jeter) Lawless and Wm. G. Lawless' ages are pretty consistent throughout the census records. This makes it impossible for Catherine to be Wm.'s mother as she would have been only 12 or 13 years old when he was born. Okay, not impossible, but improbable. Therefore I believe that Catherine was a 2nd wife of John Lawless and his first wife died before 1840 and this first wife was probably the mother of the first few children of John. John may be the son of the John Lawless b. c. 1765 who died in Elbert Co., GA and his 1st wife Sarah Tanner. They were married 25 Dec. 1786 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.

Wm. is known to be in Alabama as early as 1849 as his father's probate records name him as Wm. G. Lawless of Greene Co., AL. In 1858 Wm. registers a tract of land at the Land Office in Demopolis, Greene Co., AL described as being at the SE quarter of the NW quarter of Section 17 in Township 21 of Range 4 E in the District of Lands Subject to sale at Demopolis containing 39 acres and 92/100 of an acre. He was granted this land on 20 Aug. 1858. He left Alabama and arrived in Texas in 1883.
Early Alabama marriage record books shows the marriage date and place of William to Mahala McGee. There are no death certificates for William or Mahala but they have tombstones in the Tryon Cem.

Sarah (Sallie) remarried after the death of John and is buried at the Tryon Cem. in Kurten, TX under the name of Sallie Sherrod. Sallie has a dau. named Lula in 1870. Lula cannot be the dau. of John since he died in 1863. Sallie and Lula are going by the surname of Lawless so this is before Sallie married Carr B. Sherrod. It is unknown who Lula's father is although Carr names her as his dau. in the 1880 census and she is now going by the surname of Sherrod instead of Lawless.

I, Sylvester M. Lawless do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all wills by me at any time heretofore made.
1. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid.
2. It is my will and desire that my wife shall have one half of all our community property and this will is not intended to affect her right to the same.
3. It is my will and desire that my children, Thomas Lawless, James Lawless, Henry Lawless and Ida Lawless have all my separate property and my half interest in the community property of myself and my wife, Lucy Lawless or the proceeds of the same should my executor sell it some or any part of it.
4. It is my will and desire that my said wife out of our community property and my separate property shall have a support so long as she lives and remains unmarried and it is my will and desire that my children also have a support maintenance and education out of the same.
5. And should any other child be born to me it is my will and desire that such child take the same benefits under this will that my children already named do.
6. It is my will and desire that no other action shall be had in this county court in relation to the settlement of my estate than this probating and recording of this will and the return of an inventory appraisement and list of claims of my estate. I hereby appoint my brother, James M. Lawless the executor of this will and is is my will and desire and I direct that he be allowed to act as such without being required to give any bond or security as such executor.
7. It is my will and desire that my said executor shall have full power and authority and he is freely empowered and authorized to possess managers control and dispose of my estate as he may in his judgment deem best and should he deem it necessary or best to pay debts or to support my wife and children or to maintain and educate my children or to promote their interest he is authorized to sell, mortgage or otherwise dispose of any or all my estate real and personal and make proper deeds or other instruments to carry out this authority and subject to this right and power conferred by this section of my will the other sections and to be construed.

Notes for JOHN H. LAWLESS:
I have not been able to find any John Lawless that would fit this man in any census records, except in his father's household. I don't know if he came to Texas with the rest of his family but I don't think he did. He lived, married, and probably died in Jefferson Co., AL. His wife's name was M. C., I think perhaps it was Mary C. In the 1900 census there are 4 Lawless children named as step-children to William J. Harris, their mother is named Mary C. I think John died and Mary remarried. Unknown when he died but his last child was born in 1887 so he at least lived until then. William and Mary Harris have been married for 6 years at this time (1900), so they had to have been married about 1894 and their first child was born Nov. of 1895.

Wallace Ervin Lawless, 89, formerly of Baytown, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997 in Winston-Salem, NC.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1908, in Brazos County to Walter Rhodes and Nora Lloyd Lawless. He retired from the Exxon refinery in the accounting department.
Lawless was a resident of Baytown for 65 years where he was a former city councilman in the early 1950's. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Baytown and the Goose Creek Masonic Lodge No. 1192. He played baseball for the Humble Oilers and competed in national checker tournaments. He had resided in Winston -Salem for the past three years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Amy Broussard Lawless; a son, Joel W. Lawless; two brothers, L. L. Lawless of Baytown and W. M. Lawless of Houston.
Lawless is survived by his son, Dr. Michael R. Lawless and wife Sandee; four grandchildren, Melanie L. York, Stephanie L. Setzer, Kyle W. Lawless and Kristen L. Chester; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Lawless and Emily Lawless and a sister, Earline Wren of Houston.
The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at Earthman Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Bill Ingram oficiating. Masonic funeral rites will follow. Burial will be at San Jacinto Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of usual remembrances, memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church, 505 Rollingbrook Dr., Baytown.
Arrangements are under the direction of Earthman Funeral Directors.

TYLER - Services for Gaston Stuart Dyess, 86, of Tyler are set for 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Tyler. The Rev. Michael Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Bright Light Cemetery in College Station.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Burks-Walter-Tippit Funeral Home in Tyler.
Mr. Dyess died Tuesday at The Clairemont in Tyler.
He was born in Bryan. He was a retired rose grower and restaurateur. Mr. Dyess was a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Dyess.

Services for Gertrude "Trudy" Lloyd, 78, of Kurten are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of Bryan-College Station.
The Rev. Rob Chandler of First Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Kurten Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hillier Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church.
Mrs. Lloyd died Sunday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
She was a lifelong resident of Kurten. She attended McKenzie-Baldwin Business School and retired as a secretary for the Texas Highway Department. She was a member of the Kurten Mothers Club, treasurer of the Kurten Cemetery Association, a church secretary and a council member.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don E. Lloyd.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary K. Lloyd of Kurten and Donna L. and Thomas W. Kochan of Huber Heights, Ohio.

GATESVILLE - Private graveside services for Dr. James Truman "J.T." Lang, 86, of Gatesville were held in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.
Arrangements were under the direction of Gatesville Funeral Home in Gatesville.
Dr. Lang died Wednesday in a Temple hospital.
He was born in Kurten and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1943 with a degree in veterinary medicine. He was a member of the Texas A&M Lettermen’s Association and was awarded the most valuable player award for basketball. He was in private practice in Crockett until 1959, when he moved to Pidcoke, Texas, and engaged in a hog-feeding operation and later raised cattle and Welsh ponies. He also owned a hog-feeding operation in Comanche.
He was a member of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He was a 50-year endowed member of the Cedar Creek Masonic Lodge No. 300 in Kurten and was an Episcopalian.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Carter Lang of Gatesville; a daughter, Ann Carter Lang of Austin; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Lang graduated from Marlin High School in 1931 and from Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Miss., in 1934 with a bachelors degree in library sciences.
She was an avid tennis player and won the Gulf Park College Tennis Championship in 1932 and 1933. She also loved horses.
Mrs. Lang married the late James Truman Lang on April 16, 1943, in Marlin.
The couple lived in Crockett, Kilgore and Pidcoke, where they had a hog farm and raised Welsh ponies.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Carter Lang of Austin and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Gatesville Public Library or the Marlin Public Library.
The family will receive visitors after the funeral service.

In later years, they raised Welsh ponies. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Truman Lang; and her brothers, George Hardeman Carter Jr., Albert Shaw Carter and Robert Gray Carter.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Carter Lang of Austin; and six grandchildren.
