Music Is My Life

So, you like music too...

Well, first off I will talk about my saxophone side of my music ability.

Between 8th and 9th grade I decided to take up the alto saxophone. For the first three months, I taught myself how to play. I passed off First Division Band Method part 3 by the end of July. September started and I started my private lessons. I really wanted to be in jazz band in high school, so I decided to try out in April. I auditioned because I wanted to gain experience for future autitions, but it turned out that I was relatively good and I got the second alto position. My band director gave me two saxophone solos, ("One Note Samba" and "Lester Leaps In"). I tried out in May of 1999, and got second alto again. This time, I was beat out of first chair by my boyfriend, at the time, who scored 1 point higher than me!!! Oh well...

During my 12th grade year I tried out for jazz band, and I got first alto this time!!!!! Also, I tried out in May of 1999 for Senior Drum Major for the 1999-2000 marching season, and I got that too! Something that is pretty cool is I was in the second jazz band at Idaho State University, and I was still in my second semester of high school! For the first time in 10 years, the Pocatello High School Marching Band took two trophies at a marching competition, under my direction, and Nathan's. We took 2nd place in our division, and the Gem State Award, which goes to the highest scoring Idaho band in each division.

I guess I just had a good year regarding music stuff!

Now, I started the B-flat clarinet in 6th grade. In 8th grade, I played clarinet in jazz band, and that is what got me hooked in jazz. My junior high director told me that I had to learn saxophone if I wanted to be in jazz band in 9th grade. So, I did... He gave me a solo on Chameleon, even though I had only been playing a few months. Since I played the clarinet, my high school band director decided to give me a clarinet solo in jazz band! I was extremely happy, because you don't find many clarinets in jazz band anymore. I played "Begin The Beguine," as done by Artie Shaw. It was extremely fun! I hope to get more clarinet solos in jazz band in the future!

Just so you know, I am a very dedicated band student! I got the Outstanding Sophomore award. Also, I was in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band. I participated in the Gem State Clinic Band also when I was a sophomore. I went to ISU's music camp 3 three summers in a row. To add to my list of music activities, I played the clarinet in my high school orchestra for two years. With everything else, I was also the clarinet section leader and the band secretary and treasurer during my junior year and senior year. I learned to play the Soprano Saxophone too. I got the Outstanding Junior Award my junior year (obviously). And to top everything off, I managed to make a clean sweep and receive the Outstanding Senior Award my senior year. I attended the Boise State Univesity Marching Band Clinic and Drum Corps Show, Calvacade of Workshops in July between my junior/senior year, and my senior/freshman year in college. I was in concert, pep, marching, jazz band, and orchestra throughout my 11th, and 12th grade year. My senior year I decided it was time to try out for some honor bands. I got up the courage and tried out for Gem State Honor Band, Idaho State University Senior High Honor Band, and Idaho All-State Honor band. I was second chair, first alto sax in Gem State Honor Band (there were a total of 2 firsts, and 2 seconds), and first chair, first alto sax in Idaho State University Senior High Honor Band (there were 3 first altos and 3 second altos), and I was one of the only people from my school district to make it into the Idaho All-State Honor Band! This honor band involves musicians from the entire state of Idaho, and I was second chair, first alto (there were 5 firsts, and 5 seconds), so I am pretty proud of myself!

Currently, I am the saxophone and clarinet section leader for marching band at ISU; I was second chair alto sax in symphonic band; I am the bari sax player for the wind ensemble; I play bari sax in Jazz Band I; I am the lead alto for Jazz Band II; I don't know what I'll play for concert band yet!

I am still sad that Mr. Prince, the former band director at Pocatello High School, moved to California after only two short years teaching at my high school! I will always miss him!!!!!!!! Mr. Prince did more than his share of work, and improved our bands, especially The Clark Street Jazz Ensemble, and we all thank him. I do have is e-mail address, so I can keep in touch with him.

The new band director's name is Mr. Dave Beckstead. He is also a trombonist.
