Play Ball!

I am a die hard Red Sox fan and decided to put up some pictures of my favorite players. My daughter is also a fan and is crazy about Nomar. Every time he comes up to bat she cheers him on. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

#5 Shortstop: Nomar Garciaparra, an AL MVP candidate for the second time in only his third major league season, is vying for a batting title and has established himself as one of the game's true stars. He begins his quest for a batting title on the heels of his selection as the starting shortstop for the American League All-Star team.

#13 Third base: Major role player in the Jimmy Fund's (children's cancer research) fundraising efforts and served as their radiothon spokesperson in 1996...Makes numerous visits to Jimmy Fund youngsters at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and joined with the Sox in 1995 to create a Home Run ticket program that enabled hundreds of Jimmy Fund patients to attend games at Fenway Park...Inducted into the Seton Hall Athletic Hall of Fame Jan. 24, 1995 w/Mo Vaughn, Craig Biggio & Coach Mike Sheppard.

#45 Pitcher: On September 4th in a game between the Red Sox and Seattle Mariners, Pedro Martinez recorded his career-high 20th win (20-4), which leads the Major Leagues this season. The first Red Sox Pitcher to have a 20 win season since Roger Clemens in 1990 and the 1st Sox pitcher other than Clemens since Dennis Eckersley went 20-8 in 1978.. Pedro is the Red Sox "ace" pitcher and is a delight to watch both on the field and off. Cy Young-candidate and All-Star Game MVP Pedro continues to be recognized as one of the elite pitchers in the game.

#14 Jim Rice: The eight-time all-star is among the top five career Red Sox hitters in nine offensive categories and compiled a .298 avg. in 2,089 games for the Red Sox from 1974-89. Rice slammed 382 HR among his 2,452 hits, along with 373 doubles and 79 triples. 1999 is Red Sox Hall of Famer Jim Rice's 5th year as major league hitting coach and 27th year as a member of the Red Sox.

#36 Tom Gordon: 1998: Set M.L. record for consecutive saves w/43...Broke Red Sox save record (40, Jeff Reardon 1991) and led A.L. w/46 SV...Converted 46 of 47 save opportunities...Only blown save on Apr. 14 vs. Oak. but earned 1st win in 8-6 victory ...Led A.L. and set team record for most games finished w/69 (67, Dick Radatz 1964)...Recorded 28 perfect apps...Held opponents to .191 avg. (.189 vs. LH, .193 vs. RH)...Named to A.L. All-Star Team for 1st time. Unfortuantely Tom will miss the rest of the 1999 season due to a shoulder injury. Get Well soon Tom, we miss you very much!
Tom is also the "star" of Steven King's latest bestseller "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon". It is a wonderful book and a departure from Kings normally frightening genre. Stephen King threw out the first ball to start the 1999 season in Fenway Park. The Red Sox are going to be getting a new home soon. And as the ads say "Everytime we build a new park, the Red Sox win the World Series". They last won the series in 1912. Every Red Sox fan is very familiar with the old maxim "Just wait 'til next year!" We all hope that the new stadium will bring them (and us) a winning season! Go Red Sox!

Rita, these two are just for you!! Thanks for being such a great friend!
Brett Favre #4, Green Bay Packers.
