ROB'S VIEW

I have been a Liverpool supporter all my life (18 years), and during this time I have experienced many ups and downs, regarding the club I love. My earliest memories are of the glory days of the mid 1980's, and such victories as the double in 1985/86. I experienced the Red's continued domination of this decade, concluding with the 1989/90 championship winning side (the last Liverpool title). Unfortunatley, I have also followed the club through one of it's darkest periods, the 1990's (particularly the early years). Graeme Souness came and (thankfully) left, and Liverpool's fortunes were left in the hands of Roy Evans. Personally, I believe Roy has done an excellent job, and despite the lack of silverware, he has definatley reinstilled the boot room traditions of old, whilst also laying the foundations for the future, with the development of some exciting new talent. Having said this, I also feel his time at the club (as manager at least) is over. I thoroughly approve of the apointment of Gerard Houllier, although the board should of shown some courage and placed him as sole manager. Hopefully, this new foreign influence will see an up turn in the club's fortunes, as I honestly believe we possess a squad of players, better than that of any other in the league, bar none.

My first choice squad, barring injuries, and suspensions would be:

Goalkeeper: David James
Right Back: Veggard Heggem
Left Back: Steve Staunton
Centre Back: Jamie Carragher
Centre Back: Dominic Matteo
Right Midfield: Patrik Berger
Left Midfield: Steve McManaman
Centre Midfield: Jamie Redknapp
Centre Midfield: Paul Ince (captain)
Striker: Robbie Fowler
Striker: Michael Owen
Substitutes: Brad Friedel, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Karlheinz Reidle, Jason McAteer, Oyvind Leonhardson.

I really do feel that a side similar to this would be capable of beating any other in the Premier League. As far as additional signings go, I genuinly feel we don't lack a great deal. Obviously, we are short of a little quality centrally at the back, but the key here for me is settlement. In Dominic Matteo and Jamie Carragher we have two young, excellent centre backs, who unlike most of their fellow countrymen, are comfortable and composed on the ball in the true contenental manner. They must be given a fair run in the side however, and not made the scapegoats for the poor performances of the team. The same applies for David James, a far higher quality keeper than Brad Friedel. One player I think who would do quite well at Anfield is the Lecister City and Scotland centre back Matt Elliot. Him aside, I believe we have a good squad, with a lot of depth.

Here's to a succesful season, and I have every faith that come May, we will be holding the championship trophy aloft.
