The rose was black
rising from the earth
I think it was the world that made it that way
for the package said 'Red Roses'
I know because I checked.
It seemed to suffer every day as it grew.
Each time I reached for my beautiful rose he moved just out of reach.
It was like it feared me, but reached for me as I pulled my hand back.
I saw as it grew and withered, it seemed, at the same time.
As the day of its death closed in my rose seemed to brighten.
He knew it would be over soon.
The day he died I held him in my hands.
The moment he took his last breathe, I saw his petals slowly change color.
Red all along...I said to myself smiling as I dropped him on my mothers grave.
