Much Afraid by Jars of Clay

Review

Jars of Clay's sophmore project, Much Afraid, is already making success on the general market as well as the Christian market. The album was recently reviewed in People Weekly magazine and the song "Crazy Times" is recieving airplay on secular rock radio stations. The band also recently performed "Crazy Times" on the Late Night Show With David Letterman.

There are many good things about this album. First, it measures up to their debut project. Another thing I personally like about it is how their music is a bit faster in most of the songs on this album. Also, this band has become much more popular since their first album giving them alot of success with this album. Their are also more electric guitars giving the album an edgier and more mature sound. Their lyrics are more poetic and display the band members telling where they stand. Lead singer, Dan Haseltine, has said that this album has lyrics more understandable to a non-Christian audience. There aren't a lot of Christian cliches that are hard for some to understand. Songs like "Frail," "Much Afraid," and "Overjoyed," deal with what it is like to be a child of God, while "Crazy Times" deals with the world's way of putting God off until things get bad for them. Other topics covered are racism, praise, life, and love. The song "Five Candles" may remind you of the movie Liar, Liar starring Jim Carry. That is because this song was written for the movie's soundtrack but didn't make it on there. In all, this album is mature, artistic, and well worth a listen.
