Welcome PC Lovers !!

The "harvest moon" is almost upon us, and cooler weather will mean more people are moving indoors, and online.
So, if it takes a little longer now to get to sites, or just online, be patient, and remember that the keyboard in front of you is not made to take any sharp blows!!

There has been a number of new phone services offered online, which allows PC users to talk, virtually around the world, for free. I have used "Q-Talk", an offshoot of ICQ, to converse with people in the midwestern United States, and even Europe, and it works!! Someday in the near future, it may be that the telephone on your sideboard will be a curiosity piece that
your grandkids won't know how to use!

Just a "thought"!!  If you watch any television, keep a notepad and pencil next to the remote!  I've noticed that there is a website URL on almost every commercial these days, and even more on the news and special-interest show. I have remembered a few of the easier ones, but the more complicated URLs get lost in the shuffle, and might have been very interesting to visit. In my "WHAT'S NEW" section this month there is a few of the sites that I have discovered right off the "boob tube"!
I'll go out on a small limb, and also mention that, the PC may also be the ultimate demise of television, as we now know it!

Our last meeting

Another meeting has slipped by me
but I had another commitment come up at the same time as the meeting(again) and it couldn't be avoided. I did get a brief report on what happened from one of the members that attended, and will relate it as it was given to me!

The importance of "backing up" your system was covered, as was how to make sure your PC is Y2K compliant, by going into the "settings" section and checking "regional settings" for a six-digit date. The rest of the first half of the meeting was used for "questions and answers" from the members. I'm told we had a few new faces at the meeting, which is good, but that a lot of the "regulars" didn't attend. (not so good!)

The second hour of the meeting covered the internet, and some of the interesting sites that are online. I understand that Doug was having a bit of trouble with a renagade"motherboard" as well, and  gave a brief talk on the inner workings of a PC as he tinkered with the inside of one in front of the group.

One last note!  Betty (froggie-poo) has been in the hospital recently, but is doing well at last report. Betty is one of the original, and most consistant members of the group, and I'm sure I speak for all the members whan I say,

"GET WELL SOON, Froggie-Poo"

What's new !

Search engines, sites that help us find other sites online, are becoming more and more "refined"
as the technology moves forward.
http://www.northernlight.com/
is an example of one of the newest. It has a few new ways to get you to the site you want, by using "folders" to sharpen the search. Another one, that was mentioned at the meeting this month is,

http://www.dogpile.com/
Add them to your favorites, and you'll have some fresh ammo in your "Internet Arsenal"
In last month's Newsletter I mentioned a website for Prose and Poetry, that could be read, online. I have gone one step better this month, with an entire "Library", complete with exibits!

http://www.ipl.org/
This site has reference sections, books, exibits, and many other things that a conventional library has, but this "library" is always open, and your keyboard is your "library card"!
