Welcome PC Lovers !!
The big news seems to revolve around a courtroom, and the future of the PC may be altered forever by a judge's gavel. But is that true? Like the Y2K scare that has gripped many, the breakup of Microsoft may just be a lot of "Smoke on the Water"! The general public has so enamored itself to the Windows platform for their computer "lifestyle" that all a breakup of Bill Gate's Microsoft Monoply will do is make him even stronger in the end. It will graphically demonstrate just how true it is that the man who makes a better mousetrap has the world hammering on his door.
Those of you who are reading this on the website may have noticed that there is a "pop-up" window that advertizes for "Angelfire.com", the host of the site. I was recently informed that it was a "necessary evil" and that I would be given a choice of having that pop-up, or an advertisment in the page itself. I felt that my choice was the least obtrusive way to go, and I hope it doesn't bother too many of you to have that window appear as you use the site.
I toyed with the idea of moving the whole shooting match to another host that wouldn't have such requirements, but I doubt that there is one! Such is the price of free enterprise. Everything has a pricetag!

Our last meeting
As most of you know, we didn't have a meeting this month, because Doug was taken ill. I now understand that he is "on the mend", and I know I speak for all the members when I wish him a speedy recovery. He gave of himself freely to keep the Greater Oneida PC User's Group going, and never refused to help any who asked his advise about their problems with their computer. Get well soon "Fearless Leader" you are missed by all your friends!
I would like to use the rest of this column to ask you members for your input.
I know there are millions of great sites out there on the World Wide Web, and I'm equally sure that every one of you has discovered a site that you really like to visit. How about sharing it with the group? I have had a few members e-mail me some of their sites, and many of the ones that are on "our" website came from you folks. I won't mention your names, so you don't have to be shy! How about it? Join in the fun! You got an e-mail from me, just reply, and "paste" in the URL that tickles your fancy!! Not sure how to do that? Just highlight the site name, and right click on it and select "copy". Then e mail me, and right click in the text area of the e mail, and "paste" the name in there! That's how I send you to this site!
I hope Doug will be well enough to have a meeting next month, and that I see you all there!

What's new !
It's the holiday shopping season again, and the internet is becoming a larger and more useful tool in the quest for the "perfect gift".
But often, the prices are not any better than you can get at any local store, and you must pay extra for shipping,This makes online shopping an expensive convenience. Here are, however, a few sites that usually have bargains, and even can lead you to the best prices on the World Wide Web,
http://www.pricescan.com
http://www.bottomdollar.com
http://www.coolsavings.com
All of the above sites have or can lead you to bargains online.
You can also use the search engines to find better prices on products, if you know the product's part#. Look in any sales flyer, and you will usually see a part number, next to a product's picture.Type that number(exactly) into a search engine like dogpile.com, and it will lead you to sites where it can be purchased, online!
