Welcome PC Lovers !!
The big news this month(I suppose) is a virus called "I LOVE YOU", and all the nasty little "clones" it inspired. Without going into too much detail, this one could be avoided very easily if you know what you are getting in your mail. I have made it a policy to NEVER accept attachments with e-mail unless they are obviously pictures or very short messages( 1k or less) If an attachment ends with .exe, it means it will execute a "maneuver" of some type, and those attachments must usually be left unopened until the sender can be asked about it! I plan on making the website I mentioned ,that has new info on most viruses , my "Website of the Week". A quick peek at their mainpage from time to time might not be a bad idea.
I just want to take a quick moment to say "WELCOME" to our newest group members! Every group must have active members to continue, and we have recently gotten a few new members who are taking an active interest in the group. That's all it takes! A few active members!
So, if you are coming to the meeting, and have a friend you'd like to bring along , by all means bring them!! And some of you long-standing members who have been missing out, you really should stop in for a meeting!! We've been covering the "basics" of PC use, and every meeting we are learning more and more about how to put the "P"(personal) in P C!

Our last meeting
Our May meeting was well attended, and we went right on with our" back-to-basics" theme, with "Windows 102"!
We discussed a number of topics, including the E-mail viruses that have been spreading lately, and the best ways to avoid them.Customizing the desktop and adding shortcuts were demonstrated, as well as the pros and cons of having a number of items in the taskbar and desktop areas.
After the break, we continued with our basics, and answered a few questions from the members. The need for large Hard drives was touched upon, and some members talked about their new "E-machines", smaller memoried computers that are mostly used to access e-mail, and the World Wide Web.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 14th (so far) but I will keep all members posted on this! Summertime often means we skip a couple meetings so that everyone can get out and enjoy the summer! If we do have a meeting, I'll be emailing you all with the info, and I'll keep you posted on any other important happenings in "CyberSpace" as well.

What's new !
I guess the "big news" this month has been the rash of viruses that have spread across the planet, and scared everyone out of reading their e-mail. If a few precautions are taken, everyone will be quite safe. All you need to do is know what to look for!
Basically, most e-mail spread viruses are in the attachments.
Opening the mail itself is generally safe, but the "attached" information may contain a virus.
The most recent ones can easily be identified by the "vbs" ending to their name. I am also usually wary of attachments ending in "exe" as they usually will "execute a program" of some type.
If all else fails, send an e mail to whomever sent you the suspicious mail you receive, and ask them if they know about it. This should eliminate any problem, and keep you and your PC safe!
