September 18, 2004

"It's Academic" Taping

Walter Johnson played Osbourn and West Springfield on September 18, 2004 at NBC studios in Washington, D.C. The Wildcats began the game by correctly answering all 10 questions in the lightning round. They answered all their questions in the team rounds correctly. WJ won the game with a score of 705 to 365 to 370. The game will be aired on October 2nd.

Thomas Jefferson Tournament

WJ attended the NAQT tournament at Thomas Jefferson High School. Our performance at this tournament was too awful to receive a tournament summary.


October 10, 2004

University of Maryland Fall High School Tournament

The Wildcats came out of the preliminary rounds undefeated, and ranked fifth overall out of 48 teams. In the playoffs, WJ easily defeated Altherton and then fourth ranked Hammond with a score of 500 in each game. In the semifinals, they were defeated by the eventual champion, Blake. WJ tied for 3rd place and qualified for the PACE NSC in Orlando next June. WJ's B team had a very successful tournament as well. They were 4-2 in the preliminary rounds with a noteable win over Churchill. They were ranked 17th after the prelinaries. A good time was had by all and the team looks forward to further improvement.


October 19, 2004

Quizmaster Preseason Tournament Preliminaries

WJ finished the preliminary round of this tournament undefeated and ranked 2nd. The team averaged over 320 points per game and allowed their opponents an average of less than 90 points per game. Additionally, WJ b bad a good day although their record doesn't reflect it. They finished 2-4 with all of their losses coming by a small margin.


October 25, 2004

Quizmaster Invitational Tournament Playoffs

WJ took second place at the Quizmaster Invitational Tournament. The team began the playoffs by defeating Rockville by a comfortable margin in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals the Wildcats defeated Whitman with a score of 320-140. The team lost in a very close game against Richard Montgomery that went into a second overtime. The final score of the game was 240-250. In the semifinals the Wildcats had a win over Whitman with a score of 320-140.


  October 30, 2004

Blake Tournament

48 teams came to compete at Blake High School in Silver Spring. WJ A finished the preliminary rounds undefeated and ranked 4th. WJ B finished the preliminaries ranked 15th with a 4-1 record after a loss to Centennial. The B team exited the playoffs in the first round after a loss to Gonzaga. The A team powered through the first two rounds of the playoffs with wins over Georgetown Day School and Thomas Jefferson B. In the semifinals, WJ A faced Thomas Jefferson A. The Wildcats came out to an early lead after the first round. However, Thomas Jefferson was able to fight back and take the victory. WJ A lost to the eventual champion Thomas Jefferson with a score of 260-210. Based upon the number of points scored, Walter Johnson was named the 3rd place team.


November 9, 2004

RichMo Stakes

Walter Johnson's A team took the championship at this tournament. The team won all three games in the preliminaries and made the top bracket of the playoffs. They beat Whitman and then Eleanor Roosevelt and played Blake in the finals. Walter Johnson took control of the game on the first question with captain Zach Hommer's correct response of Jay and Silent Bob off the clue "heterosexual life partners". The team went on to win with a score of 230 to 150. The B team's performance at this tournament was also very successful. Andre Joutz, was able to lead the team to 7th place in his first time serving as captain of the B team this year.

Walter Johnson beat Wootton with a score of 630 to 295.


  December 8, 2004

Knowledge Master Open

Walter Johnson scored 1680 and placed 20th in the country out of 881 competing schools.

Beltway League

Round 1

A Team: 3-0 with wins over Springbrook, Paint Branch and Whitman.

B Team: 1-2 with a win over Bullis and losses to RM A and Churchill.

C Team: 1-2 with a win over Kennedy and losses Whitman B and Einstein.


Round 2

A Team: 2-1 with wins over Northwest and Gaithersburg and a close loss to RM.

B Team: 3-0 with wins over Paint Branch, Blake B and Magruder.

C Team: 1-2 with a win over Bullis and losses to Wootton and RM B.


Round 3

A Team: 3-0 with wins over Einstein, Churchill and Blake.

B Team: 3-0 with wins over Whitman A, Gaithersburg and Wootton.

C Team: 1-2 with a win over Wheaton and losses to Springbrook and Blake B.


Round 4

A Team: 3-0 with wins over Whitman B, Wheaton and Sherwood.

B Team: 2-1 with wins over Northwest and Springbrook and a loss to RM B.

C Team: 1-2 with a win over Churchill and losses to Whitman and Magruder.


Playoff Round 1

A Team: 2-1

B Team: 2-2

C Team: 2-2


Playoff Round 2.

A Team: 2-1 qualifies for the final playoff rounds.

B Team: 2-1 qualifies for the final playoff rounds.

 

  January 8, 2005

Green Eggs and Hammond

Walter Johnson attended this event despite having only one of the top four players. The team went 4-2 in the preliminaries and was seeded 14th going into the playoffs. The team lost to the eventual champions from Richard Montgomery in the first round.


  January 15, 2005

Thomas Jefferson House Written Tournament

In this tournament, Walter Johnson went 4-1 in the preliminaries with a close loss to Governor's school, but with a notable win over Blair. In the playoffs, the team faced tough science questions as they played the math and science magnet school, Eleanor Roosevelt. The team lost by a close 15 points.


  January 29, 2005

NAQT: Howard Siesta Bowl

After winning their first two games, the Wildcats left the tournament early because it was being run very slowly and inefficiently.


  February 12, 2005

Yale Bulldog High School Invitational

WJ finished the preliminary rounds 6-0 and ranked third. In their first round of the playoffs they easily beat Simsbury. In the second round they faced the South Carolina powerhouse James Island. The Wildcats almost tripled their score. In the semifinals, WJ faced a local team, Gonzaga. After a few bad negs, the team was out of the game. The Wildcats ended up in third place for this tournament out of 45 teams from around the country.

WJ won this second round game against Paint Branch and Westfield.


  March 5, 2005

NAQT: DC/Maryland State Championship at UMD

Playing without a full team, WJ beat Whitman and Blair in the playoffs. The team eventually took third place after loosing to the eventual champion, Blake in the semifinals.


  March 19, 2005

Spotswood ACT II

The team was ranked first after the five preliminary rounds. They powered through the playoffs and beat Liberty in the finals with a score of 310-140. The team only allowed one team to break 150 against them during the entire tournament. Congratulations on this tournament victory!


  April 23, 2005

Richard Montgomery Rumble on the Pike

The Walter Johnson A team's preliminary round featured wins over Blair and Whitman on the way to a 5-0 record. In the playoffs, the team went 3-0 with wins over Centennial, Thomas Jefferson D and the magnet school Eleanor Roosevelt. In the semifinals, Walter Johnson lost to the national championship team, and eventual tournament winner, Thomas Jefferson. In the consolation round, Walter Johnson soundly defeated Spotswood High School to take 3rd place. Congratulations are in order for this third place victory that featured the A team going 9-1 over the course of the day. The B team was also successful and qualified for the playoffs.

"It's Academic" Semifinals

The Walter Johnson "It's Academic" team came out ready to play hard against Thomas Jefferson and Winston Churchill High Schools. The team came from behind to defeat Thomas Jefferson by 20 points. It was a very emotional game for the team because it represented Walter Johnson's second win in the semifinals of the show over our last 8 tries. The team will go back to compete in the finals on May 21st.
