SMTC EMS

SMTC FIRST RESPONSE

Southern Maine Technical College located at2 Fort Rd. in South Portland is the proud home of SMTC First Response. This group consisting of 8 members is operated at the Basic level of Emergency Medicine. We respond to approximately 60-80 calls annually and work with the city of South Portland for our transporting mutual aid.

SMTC is the only two year school in the state that has both a Paramedicine program and a licensed service. We protect 3000 students and another 3000 visitors. The campus is located on a scenic section known as Spring Point and we have a light station by this name on the edge of our campus.

HISTORY OF THE GROUP

The group was founded in 1999 with four members and was without a license. For two years the group provided first aid response in conjunction with the Campus Security and the Student Health Center. We are dispatched by radio though Security and are tied in heavily with the Student Health Center. Recently two members of the group had the opportunity to attend a National Collegiate EMS Foundation Conference in Islandia New York. This three day event included a trade show, and several classes. Visit our links page for pictures from the conference.

At the conference SMTC was the only two year school represented. Through networking our representatives found that SMTC is presently one of the best prepared services at two year shcools in the nation.

Thank you for visiting this site. It is under construction.
