The purpose of this website is to
provide information on the prevention of transmission of all respiratory
infections in healthcare settings. The importance of respiratory etiquette
has become ideal in today's society since the impact of severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the hysteria of limited numbers of flu
vacine.
In 2003, SARS had afflicted 8,427 people and causing 813 deaths, primarily in Asia. Although no deaths were reported in the United States, about 40 people died in Canada. Panic was triggered by SARS, a disease that supposedly jumped from animals to people. Respiratory etiquette is the new term that has come from this panic across the world. Another term is hand hygiene. We have washed our hands for years. With the spread of methicillin resistant staphlococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) being prevalent not only in nursing homes but in communities and hospitals, hand hygiene is very important. How many people are we around everyday that do not cover that mouth when they cough? How people do you observe that do not wash their hands after going in and out of patient's rooms? |
