William McWhinney born about 1730 in Ayr, Scotland. Died 1785 in Kentucky. He was married 1751 in Ireland to a Margaret.

i. Robert McWhinney born 1753 in Ulster, Ireland. Died 1793 in Cumberland, Pennsylvania.
ii. Thomas McWhinney born 1755 in Ulster, Ireland. Died 25 February 1828 in Jackson, Preble Co., Ohio. He was married 1786 in Virginia to Eleanor Bell Fryar born 1760 in County Down, Ulster, Ireland. Died 31 December 1845 in Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana.
iii. James McWhinney born 1757 in Ulster, Ireland.
iv. Isabella McWhinney born about 1759 in Pennsylvania.
v. Stephen McWhinney born 1760 in Pennsylvania. Died 1775 in Boonesborough, Kentucky.

James McWhinney and Mrs. James McWhinney
Their Children:
i. LaVina McWhinney born 17 April 1811 in Tennessee. Died 3 June 1876 in Fargo, Brown Co., Illinois. She was married 15 April 1834 in Preble Co., Ohio to John T. Kendrick born 12 March 1812 in Knox Co., Tennessee. Died 31 January 1879 in Fargo, Brown Co., Illinois.

William McWhinney: William and Margaret were born in Ayr, Scotland, immigrating to Ulster, Ireland sometime between 1732 and 1751. They , along with their first three sons, immigrated to Eastern Pennsylvania about 1758. They later moved to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. One account says that William moved on to Kentucky about 1777, leaving the rest of the family in Pennsylvania. It appears he died in Kentucky.

Robert McWhinney: He remained in Pennsylvania when the rest of the family migrated to Ohio. Robert was a Deputy Constable in Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

Stephen McWhinney: Killed by Indians in Boonesboro, Kentucky while working with his father and Daniel Boone in forming Boonesboro, Kentucky.

Thomas McWhinney Jr.:He served as Pvt. under Col Samuel Wear, Capt. Rufus Morgan, East Tennessee volunteer infantry. Enlisted Men, War of 1812.

William McWhinney: Served in War of 1812 from Tennessee. Served in Capt. John Child's company, Tennessee Militia as a Corporal. Later he moved with his wife, children, parents and siblings to Jackson T.S., Preble Co., Ohio. At his death he left five small children. "Early Ohio Settlers, Southwestern Ohio 1800-1840". William McWhinney purchased land in Preble County, Ohio on Jan. 22, 1816 Range 01, Township 08, Section 34. Widow's pension papers filed by spouse, Elizabeth Kendrick McWhinney, dated 25 Oct 1871.

John McWhinney: Served as a Private in Capt. John Lewis Tennessee command. Information found in "War of 1812 Pensioners".

Matthew McWhinney: Fought in War of 1812. Served in Cpl. Maj. John Chiles, Capt. Chas Conway, East Tennessee Mtd. Gunmen. When his brother, William, was taken ill, Mathew carried him home on his back. In 1816 he along with his parents and several siblings moved from Tennesee to the vicinity of what is now West Florence, Ohio. 1850 census of Preble County, Ohio. "Enlisted Men, War of 1812". "History of Preble County, Ohio": "Matthew McWhinney, along with his wife, Temperance Kendrick, emigrated to Preble County, Ohio in 1816. He settled in Jackson T.S. where he entered and cleared up 80 acres of land. Mr. McWhinney commenced pioneer life here with no means except a horse and wagon, but by a life of industry and toil, he accumulated a good property, his farm finally consisting of 320 acres. He died in 1859, surviving his wife 5 years. She died in 1854.

James McWhinney: According to a family file on the McWhinneys found in the library at Eaton, Preble, Ohio, James died in the War of 1812, leaving his little 1 year old daughter to be raised by her grandparents. We can find no record of the wife.

LaVina McWhinney: An only child raised by her grandparents Thomas and Eleanor McWhinney.
