OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

"Blessed are those who can give without
remembering and take without forgetting."
-- Elizabeth Bibesco, poet

In the USA, one out of nine women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime, according to the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations. This year, 182,800 new cases will be diagnosed, and 40,800 women will die. Men suffer from the disease, too — 1,400 male cases are projected to be diagnosed this year, and 400 men will die.

Breast cancer doesn't just affect the victim, however. Family and friends, too, must learn how to deal with the illness and the necessary treatments. (USA WEEKEND full story)  (Source)

These days many couples are registering with services that donate a percentage from wedding gifts bought through them, to charity. For example, the I Do Foundation www.idofoundation.org will donate up to 8% of any gifts on your registry purchased through them to a charity of your choice.

Some couples are even asking guests for charity donations instead of gifts. The average ages of brides and grooms today are 27 and 29, and many have all the toasters, dishes and blenders they need.

Other ways couples are using their wedding for greater good... contacting organizations which will benefit from leftovers, such as food pantries and soup kitchens. Nursing homes are usually happy to accept leftover flowers to brighten up patient's rooms.

“Brides Against Breast Cancer” gown sales continue to be important fund-raising events for Making Memories. Their 32 yearly shows provide brides-to-be with an opportunity to find their dream gown (at an incredible savings,) while making wishes and dreams come true for women and men who are losing their fight against breast cancer.

The worldwide support of designers, manufacturers, bridal shops and individuals (who donate a most treasured possession,) make possible our "Nationwide Tour of Gowns" sales. The proceeds from these events help bring a moment of joy into world of someone for whom a cure is too late.

“Brides Against Breast Cancer - Nationwide Tour of Gowns Sales”

The Nationwide Tour of Gowns has something for everyone, boasting a wide range of styles and fabrics, in sizes 4 to 24. Slips, veils, shoes and other accessories are also available in select locations.

Our Brides Against Breast Cancer program has received more than 40,000 wedding gown donations, with an estimated resale value of over 4 million dollars. This generous endowment is due in part, to Making Memories national media coverage, including magazine articles in Redbook, Family Circle, Woman's Day, Martha Stewart’s Winter Wedding, Time, Philanthropy World and Modern Bride, along with appearances on, Oprah Winfrey, CNN, MSNBC, Ananda Lewis and hundreds of television and newspaper interviews.

Best selling author Geralyn Dawson, developed an interest in Making Memories when she featured the Foundation in her 2002 novel, “The Pink Magnolia Club.” Geralyn's contribution to the organization, which "holds a special place in her heart," has grown over the years.  She is presently a member of the board of directors and is now working on an original non-fiction book to benefit Making Memories called, the "One Good Turn" project. To read more about this venture please visit www.geralyndawson.com."

How to Donate Your Gown

How can you help make dreams come true? At this time, we are in need of contemporary gown styles, slips and veils dating from 1995 until the present day. Each gown that arrives at our organization is carefully prepared for our upcoming "Brides Against Breast Cancer, Nationwide Tour of Gowns" sales. The thousands of generous donations we receive from designers, manufactures, bridal shops, and individuals worldwide, enables Making Memories to grant final wishes to women and men suffering from terminal breast cancer.

Until recently, we have been able to accept gowns from all era's and in any condition that we sell nationally and worldwide or produce into quilted artworks.  However, do to our extensive inventory of vintage, antique and retro gowns, we recommend all generous potential classic era donors withhold their contributions until we are once again able to accommodate these prized garments. We anticipate posting an announcement on this website in April of 2008 indicating our enhanced ability to manage these treasured gifts with the respect they deserve. Additional wedding related items are always welcome, we accept bridesmaid, mother of the bride and flower girl dresses, along with other wedding specific items such as veils, shoes,

Please ship your gown directly to our National Headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation
12708 SE Stephens Street
Portland, OR 97233

(NOTE: This address is for mailed donations only, you may also drop off a gown at one of our gown sales.)

Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope inside the package, and if possible, an additional $12 gift to cover some of the expense of preparing your gown for sale. Although, this amount may appear small, when multiplied by the thousands of dresses we receive it can exceed the cost of granting numerous wishes each year.  Often gowns arrive requiring laundering or dry-cleaning and all garments must be steamed, priced, place on racks, and transported to our "Tour of Gowns" events.

Manufacturers and bridal shops along with individual contributors may drop off donations of new or previously cleaned wedding gowns during any "Brides Against Breast Cancer" event where they will immediately find a position among the gowns on our sales racks. You may also send donations directly to the National Headquarters at the above address. All bridal shops and manufacturers wishing to make a donation, when we are in your area, may email mminfo@makingmemories.org or call
(503) 829-4486 for additional information.

Important Information

Prepare your gown for shipping by removing your items from any drycleaners storage boxes and selecting a carton just large enough to accommodate your gown and accessories. These simple steps will save you between $12 and $15 in unnecessary shipping expenses, since shipping cost is calculate by weight and box dimensions.

Tax Deductions

Your gift, including shipping cost, is tax-deductible. Although Making Memories strives to ensure our gracious donors receive a charitable receipt, many of our mailings return undeliverable.  Two of the most common occurrences are the mail service label (i.e. Mailbox etc) obscuring the sender's information and our own incorrect deciphering of return addresses. Therefore, regardless of your chosen method of shipping, please include a clearly printed self-addressed stamped envelope INSIDE your package to ensure a tax-deductible receipt reaches you.  Allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.

Please note: Making Memories Foundation does not place the value on your donation. We ask that you consult your tax professional to determine the ultimate price of your contribution. If your gift is worth less than $250, a receipt is unnecessary to receive your federal income tax deduction. However, if your gown donation merits a value of $250 or more, please retain the Making Memories receipt for preparing your federal income tax return. Once you have sent your gown, you may choose to download the donation receipt directly from our website at http://makingmemories.org/2007_Donation_Receipt.pdf.

Several e-mails this past month have mentioned that the Breast Cancer site does not have enough people visiting it and clicking "fund free mammograms." It only takes a few seconds. Why not put http://www.thebreastcancersite.com at the top of your Internet Favorites list and click "fund free mammograms" for women in need each time you go on the Internet? (I have it on top, with the Hunger site right beneath it, http://www.thehungersite.com.)

PINK WEDDING OR PARTY PUNCH

2 plain Kool Aid pkgs. pink lemonade
2 c. sugar
1 (6 oz.) frozen pink lemonade
3 c. pineapple juice
Lemon or lime slices, mint sprigs
1/2 c. maraschino cherry syrup
2 1/2 qt. (10 c.) water
1/2 of 2-liter Sprite, 7-UP, or equal
(Ice ring made with some of punch)

Mix dry ingredients together and add all the liquid except the Sprite and ice ring. If making a concentrate ahead of time, leave out 2 quarts (1/2 gallon) of water and add with Sprite at serving time. The concentrate will store in a 1/2 gallon jug with expansion room for freezing if desired. Serves about 40 punch-cup-size servings (4 ounces).

To make ice ring, reserve 4-5 cups of complete punch recipe. Pour just enough in the bottom of a salad ring mold to cover bottom. Arrange thin lemon or lime circles in the ring with mint sprigs in between. Stand the sprigs in the punch so that stems are up. Carefully set in freezer and let stand until fruit and sprigs have frozen solid into punch. Add about a cup at a time of punch, allowing freezing between additions. Pour cool water over outside of mold to loosen and turn into punch bowl with fruit side up. Makes a pastel pink punch. Other flavors of Kool Aid can be substituted if desired.                                                        Cooks.com

Have to post our new addition to the site: The Pink Ribbon Dorothy Apron. It's nice. What more can I say? And, 15% of the price will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Organization. Makes a great gift for someone else or even yourself! the dishwashing gloves are cute too
