Question & Answer Session Between
Oscar Curtis and JDee Cooper
OC Question (Q)1: Today is June 10, 2004. How long have you been held
in the California Penal System?
JDee: I've been imprisoned for this crime for exactly
11 years
OC Q2: What crime were you accused falsely of committing?
JDee: I was accused of shooting and killing a 23 yr
old Black man in Los Angeles CA., because he was
allegedly spreading rumors about me & my "girlfriend",
whom he lived with for 3-4 months, along with another
roommate and her brother...which isn't true. The
victims' cousin and family told me and my girl that
they knew I was innocent.
OC Q3: Is the person who committed this crime still at
large? Do you know of his whereabouts?
JDee: The real shooter(s) are still at large and
through a thorough investigation, I've discovered that
one of the two suspects who committed the actual crime
is dead. There's one more at large...
OC Q4: Have you had any contact with any of the victim's
relatives? And even they know that you did not do this
crime?
JDee: As of this present moment, I haven't communicated
with any of the victim's family members. But in 1998, I
spoke with the victim's cousin, who was present the
night the brother was shot and killed. He told me a
second time, that he knew I didn't do this and that the
victim lost a cousin the previous summer. His family's
mindset was "JDee's going to pay for both crimes since
no one was caught for the murder of his other cousin."
This is wrong!
OC Q5: During the time of this murder (1993), were you or
any family members threatened to keep you silent?
JDEE: YES! I was threatened by several thug cats that
if I didn't keep my mouth shut then I could kiss my
mom, wife and two daughters goodbye. This eventually
destroyed my relationship with my wife and we divorced
in October 1996. I had several altercations in the LA
County Jail with gangstas who told me that "being
quiet" was the best decision I've made in my
children's life. This shit made me furious as hell
because I ain't no snitch and I don't solve crimes. I
made records with Ice Cube and that's how I
fed, clothed and sheltered my family.
OC Q6: Has Dalenchmob (Shorty, T-Bone or Ice Cube) supported
you through this ordeal?
JDee: The only person out of Dalenchmob who's been a
constant support system is Shorty. Ice Cube and T-Bone
haven't even sent a brothah a birthday card or a book
of stamps. I cannot understand this shit at all.
OC Q7: Has Ice Cube contacted you in any way in the past
11 years? Why has he left you for dead?
JDee: NO! Ice Cube hasn't answered my letters or calls in
over 10 yrs. He loaned me $1,000 in 1998 and told my
mother that that was all he'd planned to do for me. And
as far as why he left me for dead; well the only thing
I can say is that from his personal accounts is that
his wife doesn't want him helping me because of my
honesty about several situations pertaining to him, his
woman's past and some very personal issues I can't
disclose right now.
OC Q8: Is it true that DaLenchmob was not paid for their
Platinum debut CD "Guerillas In The Mist" and the song
"Guerillas Ain't Gangsta's" from the Menace 2 Society
Soundtrack?
JDee: Yes! Other than advances on royalties & tour
earnings, DaLenchmob didn't receive a royalty check at
all for the CD or that single. Ice Cube hooked us up
with a fucked up record deal. Just like he did
Yo-Yo, Kam, Del, K-Dee and the group Kausion. The Menace 2
Society Soundtrack was supposed to be our chance to
make things right because the Hughes
Brothers (producers of the film) gave me the role of
"A-Wax" in their hit movie. Ice Cube and I fell out
over my decision to do the movie 8-10 days before our
trip abroad. I guess the outcome was that we would
bless the soundtrack while abroad and get paid. We did
the soundtrack, got some change, but got robbed by Ice
Cube's manager Pat Charbonnet. Cube found out and
instead of making a moral business decision and pay us
what was rightfully and legally ours, he elected to do
to us what Eazy E (Rest In Peace) did to him. And still
professed to be "homies"...I'm cool!
OC Q9: What does multi-millionaire Ice Cube has to say
about this?
JDee: Nothing! What can he say? The only thing that
needs to be said is " I hope this 1-4 million dollar
check helps you, T-Bone and Shorty. That's what a true
MAN would do.
OC Q10: Can you briefly speak on the early days? How did
you & Cube meet? And who actually discovered the group
DaLenchmob?
JDee: The early days were the shizznit! I loved that
nigga Cube more than a gang of cats I grew up with.
I met him back in 1986 during the inception of
N.W.A.'s hits,"Boyz N The Hood" & "Dope Man". I was going to
whoop his ass over some lyrics in the song "Boyz N The
Hood", but I eventually found out that this young cat
Cube was cool as a fan. I instantly knew that he would
be a cat I would ride or die for. In 1989 we hooked up
and started the group DaLenchmob. He was going to call
"The Maad Circle" DaLenchmob and vice versa, but I told
him that DaLenchmob is the hardest of the two names, so
we rolled with that one. WC and Coolio took the name
the Maad Circle. Those early days were school like and
I was the A plus pupil!
OC Q11: Is it true that you were Cube's "right hand man"
on his security team when he made his first trip East
to record his first CD, "Amerikkka's Most Wanted"?
JDee: Yes & No! I was his right hand man, but I was
basically the "street soldier" who knew all the thugs,
killaz, jackers & kidnapperz. I had single handedly kept
several gang bangers (Bloods & Crips) from doing "dirt
werk" to Ice Cube.
OC Q12: So, if you can recall, about how many times did you
prevent him from getting his "ass whipped"? lol
JDee: Not many times, but on two occasions that come to
mind, I stopped the Rollin'60's Crips & Black P. Stone
Bloods from killing him for whatever reasons they had.
They just kept driving home the point that I was
dealing with a "fake gangsta", but I just attributed
that to jealousy.
OC Q13: DaLenchmob was one of the first groups from the
West Coast to spew Anti-Amerikkkan venom and to raise
the consciousness of the youth. To the best of your
knowledge, do you know if the U.S. government had your
group under surveillance?
JDee: First off, I'd have to say that we were and are
not Anti-Amerikkkan in the sense that we hate this
powerful ass country. Notwithstanding our position, we
did not and still do not like the American Government
and the hate they teach it's citizens or the wrong
they spew in all corners of the world and the level of
hypocrisy that's in the White House. For voicing these
sentiments, there were several Congressional Hearings
about our lyrical content and the many suburban white
teens who purchased our CD's.
OC Q14: Since most of your songs were "highly" politically
charged, do you think that you were targeted and a
victim of the U.S.'s Cointelpro
Program?
JDee: I wouldn't doubt it for one minute that I was a
victim of the Cointelpro, but I do not have proof to
make that statement and stand by it as I have done
with all of my prior answers to these questions.
OC Q15: Is it true that during your trial, the foreman of
the jury was given a copy of Dalenchmob's Guerillas In
The Mist CD by the District Attorney?
JDee: YES! YES! YES! This is illegal and it constitutes
jury tampering and prosecutorial misconduct which is
more that enough for me to get a new trial. And a fair
trial, hich is guaranteed under the 14th Amendment of
the U.S. Constitution. My trial attorney, Richard
A. Walton was ineffective by not acting on this info.
Had he done so, the verdict would have been in my
favor.
OC Q16: Why were you denied any African-Americans to serve
on the jury?
JDee: Torrance, CA is one of four racist cities in the
suburbs of Los Angeles. To grant me a change of venue
or a substantial amount of African-Americans on my
jury would lessen the chances of a conviction. Keep in
mind that my case was initially dismissed by a Black
female judge. It was refiled, then she was removed from
the case and transferred to Santa Monica Municipal
Court for no good reason at all. Out of 158 or so
jurors, only 8 were Black. I'm not a math wiz, but that
is less than 10%.All of them were systematically
removed for reason's that should've been a defamation
of those respective jurors' character. I was left with
8 whites and 4 Asian-Americans who's only interaction
with Blacks from South Central L.A. was in a servitude
capacity.
OC Q17: Why wasn't a Gun Residue Test (GRT) ever conducted
on your clothes?
JDee: Through extensive research over this decade I've
learned that Gun Shot Residue (GSR) CAN NOT be washed
off. So after I asked for a "GSR" Test on my hands and
clothing worn on the night of June 20,1993 and was
denied a polygraph test, I began to understand that the
railroad test was being conducted by these overzealous, racist LA Sheriff's Detectives Havercroft & Gibson.
Keep in mind that I was arrested June 22, 1993 at
12:00 noon , so the GSR Test was reasonable and would've yielded
results in my favor.
OC Q18: Was there ever a weapon found in relation to this
murder?
JDee: Out of 13 weapons used, 79 or so shell casings
recovered, not one latent print (fingerprint) was
mines-not a partial print or a complete one with 12
point matchings. Nor was there ever a weapon found or
presented in trial that belonged to me. The victim had
two on him and his friends had two on them but only
two were shot by them...therefore only two were present in
trial AND THEY WEREN'T MINE!
OC Q19: Have you filed an appeal?
JDee: I've exhausted all my state and federal appeals.
As of February 2003, I was denied my appeal in the 9th
Circuit Court Of Appeals in California. I am so close
but so far away.
OC Q20: What would have to happen for this case to be
re-opened and retried?
JDee: For One, new witnesses and I have them. Secondly, I
have a retired sheriff who worked the vicinity and
knows plenty. Third, I need Mr. Alan Dershowitz of
Harvard University, the best Appellate Attorney in this
country and that costs money which is something I
don't have and I am trying to raise by launching this
web site!!!
OC: Thank you for your time JDee and may the Creator
keep you while you continue to fight for your freedom.
