Jason Carter was killed by an uninsured, unregistered driver that told police he had taken a couple of percacets and drank a couple of beers. Jason & a friend Jeremy were walking from Jason's house to Jeremy's house when Greg Riley went off the road, hit 2 telephone poles, a fence, some rocks then Jason. Jason jumped one way while Jeremy jumped another trying to get out of the way of the speeding out of control car. Jason was hit and thrown 78 feet. Jeremy was almost hit by the hood of Greg's car as it flew off. He ended up flat on his belly in the middle of a major road to avoid being hit. Jason had jump towards the cars in a driveway but did not make it. Grey Riley's car went 475 feet before hitting Jason and finally went through another fence and came to rest in a field almost a 100 feet from where he hit Jason. The homeowner and neighbors called 911 immediately. Greg Riley got out of his car, helped his passenger out then ask Jeremy to help him push his car to the road so he could get his car out of there before the cops came. Jeremy of course lost it and ask Greg did he know what he had done. Jeremy also called Jason's mom. She arrived on the scene just after paramedics and police arrived. Greg Riley never showed any concern for Jason or Jeremy, all he cared about was getting out of there. He was so nonchalant that Jason mother who was understandably emotional slapped him twice after asking if he knew what he had done and trying to get him to show some type of emotion. He (Greg) only emotion was to yell to the police do you see what she did to me. You need to arrest her. Jason was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was declared DOA.
Greg Riley was charged with numerous offenses. At trial, he denied telling police about the percacets and beer. He called 17 plus officers liars. He also claims it was a tragic accident and not his fault at all. In spite of his defense and no blood test to prove the presence of drugs, he was convicted of manslaughter, negligent driving and driving an illegal vehicle. He appealed his convictions numerous times and all appeals were denied.
Jason’s mother & family have tried to come to terms with Jason’s loss. Hilde (Jason’s mother) has been fighting for mandatory blood test for drugs and alcohol in every crash that involves serious injury and death. The trial took 6 long days with Jason’s family and friends being left in suspense as to whether Greg would pay for his crimes. Everyone was an emotional wreck. Thankfully, the jury saw through the defense’s lies & excuses. The jury brought back the guilty verdict. Greg Riley was sentenced to 10 years with all but 3 suspended. He was given 3 years in work release (because he has a family), 3 years home detention and 5 years of probation during which he is to not use drugs or alcohol.
Jason was given a death sentence for going to a friends house and his whole family has been sentenced to a life of grief & pain while missing their loved one and wondering why.
Greg Riley has never admitted to doing anything wrong although he was driving an illegal car. Had his car been parked and not on the road, Jason would be alive today. Had Greg not decided a couple painkillers and a couple beers were ok to drive on Jason would be here today. What happened was not an accident. It could have been prevented if Greg would have chosen to follow state law. It was a violent homicide because of the choices Greg made. He might not have planned on murdering anyone but his choices lead to murder just as much as if he had had a couple pain killers with beer and shot an unlicensed gun down the same road. Two tons of car kills just as violently as a bullet.
Greg Riley is scheduled to be released from jail on Jan. 22, 2004. He is to be on house arrest for 3 years. He is only allowed to leave his house for work, doctors appointments etc. He is not allowed to be near alchohol or bars. Part of his sentence is that he is not to drink or do drugs. If you see him breaking the conditions of his home detention please call police.

Greg Riley has been out of jail for a couple years now. He has yet to make any attempt to pay his court ordered restitution. His parole/probation has not been violated yet.
Jason's mom is unable to get online now and it may be a while before she is back. As if it isn't bad enough to lose a child and a part of your heart Jason's mom has had some health problems and financial difficulties. It has been a few very difficult years for her and the family. Things are slowly looking up and she is working at trying to get on her feet again. Please keep her and the family in your prayers. Thanks, CC

Greg Riley was found guilty of manslaughter today. He was also found guilty of many traffic violations. He can get up to 10 years in jail for the felony manslaughter. Let us hope he gets the whole sentence. Thank you Mr. Scarborough and Mr. Striker for doing a great job.
