The Lanhams of Maryland and the District of Columbia

Compiled by Dr. Howard G. Lanham

The following site contains lists of primary source mentions of persons named Lanham living in the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia (once part of Maryland). It is not a genealogy as such since there are many mentions that might belong to one of several people with the same name and since many of the mentions give no clue to the relationship between the individual and other Lanhams. Please click on this link for introductory and background material.

NOTES:

  1. Usually, I would not consider the surname Lanahan a variation of Lanham or list it in this site. I am making an exception here because this appears to be the children of the late Benjamin Lanham and I believe the census taker took Lanham to be Lanahan. (This is not unusual when I see how my own name is misspelled.) The only problem is that Benjamin's widow was Lethe or Eletha and the head of this household is "M. Lanahan." B. Lanahan has the correct age for daughter, Bennetta. Stephen is correct for Stephen Decatur Lanham and the unusual name Grafton Lanahan corresponds to Grafton T. Lanham. Otherwise, these persons would all missing from the 1850 census. I should add the author descends from Stephen D. Lanham.
  2. M. Bennetta Lanham was the daughter of Benjamin Lanham and Ann Hardesty.
  3. Francis Jenkins was the son of Enoch Jenkins and Anne Clarvo born April 21, 1721 (St. John's Parish Records)
  4. The March 29, 1786 marriage license of Lewis Lanham and Martha Mitchell has been claimed by various researchers for two different Lewis Lanhams. One of the Lewis Lanhams died in Prince George's Co., Maryland on October 12, 1822 and the other in Clermont Co., Ohio about 1833. That Martha's death is recorded in the bible records of the Trueman Lanham family is evidence that this marriage was not that of the man dying in Ohio.
  5. This is the Mary who married John Palmer, Jr. in 1735.
  6. She generally appears as Mary Ellen (nee Henry) Lanham. The Holy Trinity Records as a group seems to have a large number of errors or internal inconsistencies.
  7. He generally appears as Hanson Lanham.
  8. She generally appears as Mary Ellen Lanham.
  9. Meek Lanham was a daughter of Hezekiah and Bersheba (also multiple other spellings) Lanham.
