The Lanhams of Maryland and the District of Columbia

Compiled by Dr. Howard G. Lanham

The following site contains lists of primary source mentions of persons named Lanham living in the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia (once part of Maryland). It is not a genealogy as such since there are many mentions that might belong to one of several people with the same name and since many of the mentions give no clue to the relationship between the individual and other Lanhams. Please click on this link for introductory and background material.

NOTES:

  1. The March 29, 1786 marriage license of Lewis Lanham and Martha Mitchell has been claimed by various researchers for two different Lewis Lanhams. One of the Lewis Lanhams died in Prince George's Co., Maryland on October 12, 1822 and the other in Clermont Co., Ohio about 1832. That Martha Lanham's death is recorded in the bible records of the Trueman Lanham family is evidence that this marriage was not that of the man dying in Ohio. This assumes there is no evidence that the wife of the Ohio Lewis Lanham was not also named Martha. [Detailed Discussion of Controversy]
  2. This is Letitia (also as Lettecia) Lanham unmarried daughter of Hazariah and Bathsheba Lanham.
  3. This is Adam Constantine Walden (born June 1861 in Russia- 1900 Census), who was a sailor in the United States Navy. This family appears as boarders in the 1900 census of Washington. In addition to Louise Walden, born September 1865 and married for seven years, there is daughter Dora Walden born June 1893 in the District of Columbia. Adam Constantine Walden served in the USN during World War One (Maryland in the World War). The dates do not match Louise Virginia Lanham, daughter of John W. Lanham and this is either another census error or we are dealing with two persons. (There is more to this, but rather than presenting even more conflicting data, I will cut myself off here.)
