Chinchillas!

As many of you know, I absolutely love chinchillas! If you don't know what a chinchilla is...well...shame on you! You can learn about them here.

The best way to describe a chinchilla is sort of a mix between a bunny and a squirrel with mousey ears.

Wild chinchillas originated in the mountains of South America.

Chinchillas are much coveted for their soft and attractively colored furs. Unfortunately, this means that many die for the sake of fashion. In fact, chinchillas are now endangered in the wild.

Domesticated chinchillas, though, are a different matter. In the wild chinchillas can be found in one color, grey. Through years of breeding, chinchilla ranchers (who breed chinchillas for their fur) have manged to breed many different color variations.

11 original chinchillas were brought to the united states, and from those 11 all chinchillas here now are descended.

Although far too great a number of chinchillas are used for furs, many people prefer to keep them as pets, like me.
