Day 2
Military Through the Ages - MTA 2002 Jamestown, VA
"From the sublime to the submerged!" -Charity Bedwell

MTA 2002 day 2 started out foggy, damp and cold.....at 9:30am we headed down to the warf to present our tacticals to the judges.

The ship's company looks ready to begin

Captain Merrick leads his crew....lines them up for inspection then...

doffs his hat to the judges and audience.....we wenches clap wildly from the sidelines!

Capt. Merrick....shows off his warfare hardware...
If the pistol butt does not deliver a punishing enough blow,
this belaying pin could bash a few brains and a
Cutlass is always handy to have, not too long to get in the way of lines,
just the right size to cause some damage...

Tactical Cannon Drills
(and could the backdrop setting be more fitting!??)

The Captain leads his men through the steps of the cannon drill:

  • Search the piece. Make sure there's nothing left in it from last time.
  • Swab the piece. What happens if all the sparks aren't put out?
  • Advance the charge. Why do we keep the powder w-a-a-y over there?
  • Ram home the charge.
  • Load shot.
  • Ram home the shot.
  • Prime the piece.
  • Give. Everybody takes a giant step back except for the guy with the match, who comes forward.
  • Fire. Boom!

John "Chort" Montrie -  first officer adds the black powder

Boom!

More boom!

 and when all else fails.....attack!!!

Bestowing of Favours

New this year, we have created a special award:
The Order of the Red Heart
(or the Order of the Warm Tart!)
This most coveted item is a boon, a favour, and a medal... to be given to those
special flirts that offer chivalrous service and exhibit outstanding gallantry.
(ok, the little gun was what i bought in the gift shop..isn't it cute!? and the lace was a gift...i have decided to add to my bodice...making my decolletage tres elegant!)

Young Nathan, a member of the Irish Guard, was given the award by
Chastity for the selfless offer to carry a large burden for her at the end of the eve.

Charity also bestowed it upon several members of the
English Riflemen of the 94th Regiment Afoot, Napolionic War
who were kind enough to carry her burdens out to her carriage in the rain
Most notably, Rifleman Todd was tres gallant!
(sadly, as it WAS raining torrentially, no pics of that were taken)

as the day wore on it grew more rainy, cold and miserable.
my shoes, being open-backed were soaked through, my stockings and toes frozen
the ground around our camp flooded and we had to wade through  pools of muddy water to reach the supply tent. i don't have any pictures of this, it was too miserable..
but i did take this little rainy day tableau.

to give the idea of just how wet and soaked it was.

weakened by the rain, skirts soaked, stockings soggy... i gave up and went back to the hotel for a
much needed hot shower...thank goodness for the modern creature comforts!
