During the early years of World War Two personnel assigned to minesweepers wore the above pictured insignia, which reproduced the insignia painted on the sides of minesweepers. This insignia appears to have been widely worn, but several 1943 letters written by the Chief of Naval Personnel state that the insignia was not officially approved. On December 11, 1944 a different insignia worn in the fashion of a shoulder sleeve insignia and showing a mine was approved.
