The U.S. Navy adopted the Expert Rifleman and Expert Pistol Shot Medals in 1920. A Distinguished Marksman Ribbon, with four green strips, was worn by those who had won three metals in National Rifle Matches. It might seem that marksmanship would not be an important skill for a sailor; however, the Navy of 1920 was often involved with gunboat diplomacy and sailors might be called on to be members of landing parties or act as guards for naval installations.
