Meet 4 of the Metro Harriers Track and Field challenge commenced with dark ominous clouds threatening the meet from the start.
Lansdowne Track Club thrower Glenwood Edwards (sophomore) showed he will be a big force in County and State meets next year in winning with a 48' bomb. Teammate Ryan Costin (junior) threw 46'10" claiming second.
Ted Poulos (world record holder for most races run in a single year) stopped in for a visit. He overtook Northeast Track Coach Josh Alcombright in the final 100 to win the 1500 meters in 4:30.
The start of the 3,000 was reminiscent of the movie "Independence Day." A twister like, strange looking black cloud engulfed the entire stadium. High winds and heavy rain pelted the runners the first five laps. Amazingly, the sun came out during the last two laps. Ted Poulos won the race with another big kick in 9:52 over Chattanooga Track Club's Sean Higgins 9:54, and Chesapeake High School sophomore Brandon Davis in 9:55.
The deepest field of the evening was in the 100. The race featured the top three finishers in the 100 at the Anne Arundel County and Regional Championships (Chesapeake's Sean Freshwater and Matt Death plus Old Mill's Stephan Gray.) They were joined by 3-time North County State Champion Ki Ki Ellis (junior running for Frostburg), and Coppin State's Pete Pinnock who ran 10.6 last week.
Ellis exploded out of the blocks and led Freshwater and Gray at 80 meters. Freshwater and Gray closed well as all three sprinters were timed in 10.9. Freshwater won with a lean, Gray was second, Ellis was third, and Death and Pinnock a stride back in 11.0. The upcoming Championship will decide the Challenge's Fastest Man!
Freshwater, Death, and Gray teamed up with North County's Kenny Kasubinski to run a 44.0 (with good sticks) 400 meter relay. All four athletes are running for the New Carrollton Track Club.
The women were again led by Holy Family Track Club sprinter Ehinomen Olumese. Her third spring double in four meets produced times of 12.7 and 27.2.
9 year old Helen Selding from the Buffalo Chips TC in California won the 1500 in 5:20.8.
North County Track Club's Emily Deinlein continues to improve each week in the Shot Put throwing a personal best of 32 feet, 10 inches.
