The Metro Harriers opened their Sixth Annual Track and Field Challenge at North County High School's brand new resurfaced facility. Temperatures in the 90's and a sunny sky allowed for some great sprinting and middle distance running.

Copping State sprinter Pete Rinnock blew away the field in the 100 (10.6) and was outleaned by his teammate Karanja in the 200 (both athletes timed in 22.2). Coppin State 400 runner Warren Drummond blitzed the field in 49.2.

The performance of the evening for the men came in the 800. Coppin State's Beryl Harris split 400 meters in 58, and opened it up on the backstretch winning easily in 1:54.3 (fastest time ever in the Challenge's six year history, breaking record of Hubert Koj- Watkins Mill 1:55.2 in 2000).

George Ridley of the Maryland Masters Track Club had a nice double of 51.5 and 2:05.1 in the short twenty minute time span between races.

Sean Higgins of the Chatanooga Track Club won the 3000 with a big kick (10:33) and also place third in the 1500 (4:37). Track Challenge stalwart Masters runner Dave Webster place second in the 3000 (10:43) and fourth in the 1500 (4:40).

Northeast track coach Josh Alcombright was impressive in winning the Pole Vault in 11 feet 6 inches.

The performance of the evening for the women was by Noako Ishibe of the Moving Comfort Racing Team in the 1500 meters. Naoko took the lead at 800 meters and pushed the pace. She finished second overall in 4:34. Last year at the Championship meet Naoko ran 10:06 for 3,000 meters.

Ehinomen Olumese (13 year old sprinter from the Holy Family Track Club) dominated the 100 and 200 winning easily in 12.7 and 26.7.

Former Parkville High School State Champion Laura Paugh (now attending West Virginia University) won the Pole Vault in 9 feet 6 inches.
