Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas
Offered through Texas Veterinary Medical Association . Please visit their site and click on "Member Services" and then "Maddie's Fund".
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas is a two-year pilot program to spay and neuter dogs and cats belonging to low-income Texas residents in fifty-one counties. The program is administered by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA); surgeries are performed by TVMA private practice member veterinarians.
Maddie's Fund has limited Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project to counties that have provided key shelter data. To be funded, all of a county's traditional shelters and animal control facilities must provide statistics on shelter impounds, adoptions and deaths so that the impact of the spay/neuter program can be measured against baseline shelter data. New counties can be added if they provide the necessary shelter statistics.
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas is designed to act as a building block grant that stimulates the formation of community collaborations. (A community collaboration is a coalition of traditional shelters, animal control facilities, no-kill organizations and rescue groups committed to reaching an adoption guarantee for healthy shelter animals within five years.) Continuation of funding is based upon meeting collaboration benchmarks throughout the two year period. Maddie's Fund staff is working with Texas communities to help them form collaborations and reach their benchmarks.
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas began in October 2002 with a goal of altering 80,000 dogs and cats.
The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat surgery and $20 per dog surgery. Maddie's Fund is contributing between $20 and $90 per surgery, depending upon species and gender. TVMA veterinarians participating in the program will contribute the remainder of the cost by reducing their fees to help more low-income pet owners spay/neuter their companion animals. Clients are asked to show proof of low-income with a Medicaid card and there is a limit of six pets per household.
Maddie's Fund has awarded $1.2 million to the TVMA to support the first six months of the project.
Counties currently funded are listed below: Andrews, Bandera, Bee, Bell, Bexar , Brazos, Camp, Clay, Comal, Cooke, Coryell, Dallas, Ector, Ellis, El Paso, Franklin, Frio, Galveston, Gillespie, Grayson , Guadalupe, Hale, Hays , Hockley, Hood, Jack, Jim Wells, Jones, Kendall, Kerr, Kleberg, Lamar, Lubbock, McLennan, Medina, Midland, Navarro, Nolan, Nueces, San Patricio, Somervell, Stephens, Taylor, Titus, Tom Green, Travis, Uvalde, Victoria, Williamson, Young.
