I think the best place we can begin is the statistics of euthanization in this country. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 4 to 6 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year. Other organizations have estimates up to 15 million!
Every hour in the U.S., more than 2,000 dogs and 3,500 cats are born, compared to 415 humans. Many of these wonderful animals are euthanized. It is estimated that at least 61% of dogs and 75% of cats in shelters will be euthanized.
It seems hopeless at times, but we can all make a difference in the lives of these animals.
The most important thing a pet owner can do is spay or neuter their pet. Most of the animals in shelters are the results of an unplanned litter. It is not only adult animals that get euthanized, many kittens and puppies face the same pitiful end to their lives. One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years.
I have spent a lot of time on the internet researching the statistics of euthanization as a means to control pet overpopulation. The statistics are heartbreaking enough, but coming across sites that have pictures of all the animals euthanized at one shelter in one day tears my heart in two. One picture showed more than a dozen barrels overflowing with euthanized cats and dogs. I chose not to include that picture in this site, because of the extreem pain it caused me to see that. I am sure that some people would be encouraged to become more active in animal rescue if they viewed that picture, but it should not take such extreem measures to bring out the humanity in us.
You CAN make a difference. Many areas have organizations that offer low cost spay and neuter programs. Contact your local shelter, veterinarian or animal control for information on how to contact these organizations. Make sure your loved pet does not add to these statistics.
Another way that you can be of help to homeless animals is to be a foster owner to them. If you have room for just one more animal in your home you can save lives! The experience is extremely rewarding. Most animal shelters are in need of foster homes. Contact one and see if you can be of assistance. We can all make a difference by saving on life at a time.
